Courtauld Institute of Art

My sister is planning on attending the Courtauld Institute of Art to do a BA (offer of BBB). She waxes lyrical about it and how it's one of the best places in the country to study History of Art... yet me (and my parents) have had misgivings about this.

I've gone through the 'net finding out as much as I can, but I was wondering if anyone who is currently at/knows someone at the CIoA could tell me about it? The general reputation etc? Is is really what it's cracked up to be?

I know what it looks like though. I study at KCL, right next door :p: .

Cheers, it would really put mine and my parents' collective minds at rest.

I'm considering attending as well, so I'd also like to hear some opinions.

I've only heard great things about it, though, and know its teaching is rated very highly.

Well, one of my friends gave up a place at Cambridge to study History of Art at the Courtauld. She was always very enthusiastic about the place and the tutors, and, of course, London is a fantastic place to study art (think lots of galleries within easy reach, not to mention the Courtauld's own collections). It's very well respected among art historians, as far as I know.

I think it may be a bit like SOAS, in that it's well respected for what it does (most notibly History of Art) by those in the know, but nobody in the general population has actually heard of it.
i've heard that it's one of the best places in the country to study art.

P.S. - you sound like you're really interfering in her life - let her study where she wants! i'd be really annoyed if i had an older sibling who kept questioning my choice of university, especially when they sound like they know nothing about the subject (if you knew much about art, wouldn't you have visited the courtauld?)

For post grad the Courtauld is probably the most prestigious place to study History of Art. I know a lot of people who went to Oxbridge and went on to study at the Courtauld. It's a really nice place to live because it's near Kings in the Strand but there's also the really amazing Courtauld gallery which a good collection of modern art on your doorstep and it's overlooking to Thames.
