    I wouldn't have thought so.

    Besides, many large companies that are chemical engineering-orientated I would imagine would not be willing to take on a 17/18 year old for work experience.

    However if you do happen to get a bit of work experience somewhere it may prove valuable as it will demonstrate to the university that you are committed to the subject.
