I have accepted an unconditional offer to university, so fulfil the the criteria to get a student bank account (with most banks).

But, is it to early to open a student account? I seem to remember that they offered lots of incenstives (free mp3 players, rail cards etc) but don't seem to do so anymore.

    Should I wait?

This should be in the Student Finance thread really.

The banks don't start offering the good stuff until close to the start of the uni year, August time usually. I'd wait til then if you can.

I had opened mine by this time last year... I wanted it to put on my student finance forms. My parents like to be organised, so I was filling them in this time last year too.
I went with HSBC and got 10 free CD's which was quite a nice present to look forward to every month. If you go into the bank and enquire they will tell you about the account and what freebies they are offering this year. To be honest, they're mostly pretty crappy anyway.

    This may be of interest:

Though, it seems to be aimed for international students.
