    Hi how does sulphur dioxide react with water and what would the pH of the resuting solution be? i can only find the reaction for sulphur trioxide in my notes!

    I *THINK*:

    SO2 + H2O -> H2SO3

    Sulphurous acid (the product) is a weak dibasic acid and is unstable. Don't think it can be isolated as a pure compound.

    Then further oxidation in atmosphere to H2SO4
    Not sure about this last mechanism tho. Or the pH.
