Maybe be a little more specific about the area of design your studying, and what sort of advice you're after.

do a well-rounded portfolio- include as many aspects of art/design in it as u can, obviously focus more on the sort of design your course will include- for example if you're doing graphic design do some sketches of objects that may feature in advertising etc, and logos etc.

I would suggest make sure you use as much 1st hand reference as you can. With that develop your ideas into your designs Uni/Colleges love that stuff. They will appreciate a few sketchbooks to flick through as it shows them how you gather your information quickly but, advance slowly i:e Your folio. Not too many photos and photocopies of things they are there to see your own work. Also a few small scale examples of finished items or photographs if they are 3d in a separate folio. Monut on black card and Dont subhead they hate that. Hope this helps ???
