Applying for History, American Studies

I am planning to apply for History at four different universities. But for my fifth choice, the American Studies course looks much better than the History course at the same uni. It is also important that I get an offer from this particular university.

So my question is, will it look bad to be applying to two different courses?
In terms of my personal statement, I have virtually started by saying ‘I want to study a degree in history because…' will this make it unlikely to be accepted for an American Studies course? I have mentioned a specific interest in American history.

And finally, if I apply for the four year course, the course title is ‘American Studies (History)’. Do you think this would solve the problem, as I would be specialising in history?

I know I have asked a lot of questions, but any insight would be appreciated.
