we're gettin a fair few threads on which unis better, which ones not etc. and most of the discussion is based on reputation. Howver there are many things far more important than just reputation. You r goin 2 b livin there for the next three years, if you don't like it ur goin 2 have a **** time. When choosin unis whether u wud like livin their or not is far more important than rep. When choosing universities is is essential to take that into account as if u make the wrong choice u'll b screwed., Don't just rely on opinions of people on this forum and make up ur mind on that, actually go and visit the place, look at the course structure. Some course r more appealing than others! Rep is only one tiny part of choosing a uni. Wot suits one person will not suit another.

i think this is common sense really, but obviously rep does come into place, and when you like both unis the same way, obviously you choose the one with better reputation. You have to keep in mind that not everyone has got perfect information about what differences between universities are, or have the ability to predict how their lives will be like at different universities. However, reputation is something that is quite obvious sometimes. Yes, there are indeed many more important factors such as the course structure etc...

Yes this why I never understand questions like which is better? Warwick or Manchester? When the location and type of university is totaly different.

yes but on this forum people are narrow-minded and just think about rep, rep and rep. You can find about what it is goin 2 b like at a uni by staying overnight there etc. It seems to me that a lot of people on this forum are far too narrow-minded and may make the wrong university choice as a result of this. Anyway bar oxbridge the rest of the top unis are pretty similar in terms of rep. e.g. durham gets bashed a lot on this forum but it has an extremely good employment rep. People on this forum assume they know everything about a uni's rep etc. and they're know more qualified than a person on the street!

you are on to something there, and i guess it's true, people here are obsessed with rep but if there's someone here who has studied all their lives and worked really hard to get into oxbridge or lse or warwick or notts or whatever just for the prestige, bla bla then it's their choice inn the end and will probably make them happy. maybe not as happy as they would be if they'd just chosen a uni based on what a fantastic time they'd have there, but some people wouldn't mind this at all. or a better example might be of an international student. we pay LOADS, an extortionate amount practically and we want to make sure that it's worth it which means going to somewhere like LSE no matter what because anything less will not be recognised in our countries. for example, great places like manchester, durham or bath aren't known in my country at all. so even if it might be more fun, but in the long term it'll cost a lot.

Thats perfectly understandable, with any luck the numerous other great institutions will soon umprove there brand name enough to be recognised globablly and thereby allowing internation students more freedom.
