    Thats definitely a good point.
wow ur certainly addicted to this lol (not being rude)..6073 posts????!

i think that net can lead to social exclusion etc but it really depends on what type of things you do on the net.

i mean, i always thought of chatting on the net like on these forums, as a way helping people to develop social skills by being able to allow us meet a very diverse community. you can then use these skills to then be able to converse with people outside of the computer world. the net also allows people to get update with current affairs, latest music etc which also allows you to benefit socially and enhance face to face relationships.

but people who browse on the net like that 'fat man eatting burgers' will in know benefit them socially and will make them socially excluded. i mean pedos etc have the same exclusion after as well and will im guessing wil never be able to look at people in the way normal civilians will look at each other.

well talking to people on forums may also be a way of isolating yourself even further as that way you get all the social interaction you need on the net and are even more frightened of real life.

Well yes, but when you try and converse with people (in my school) that have zero sense of humour or drive, then it becomes boring.

How can the internet lead to social isolaton!! The internet connects millions of people together. Take this forum for instance, we would never have met and exchanged ideas otherwise, no, thus we have enriched ourself socially.

But you might have gone out and met other people face to face. Now, personally I think a forum like this does involve certain "social skills" , you just have to deploy them in a different way.

I like using the internet to communicate, because it means that I can be myself without running the risk of getting punched in the face.

Some people lack the skills for face to face socialising, as I do, and find it a lot easier to talk online.

I don't understand though, you aren't even offensive really. You are quite funny at times, and often witty, so what problem do people have with you (outside UKL)???

    You seem alright to me.

    My names Jez...

... And im addicted to the internet...

    >>AWAITS APPLAUSE<<

Anyhow, on a more serious note.

Im currently doing my AS Levels.

Now, everyone knows how much work goes into these anyway. Put onto of that a part time job, D of E gold commitment, cub scout leader training, Air Training Corps, and extra curricular activity (currently learning c#,c++,and HTML in depth) and you have my life.

I live a 24 hour day... And am currently having very little sleep.

I dont generally have time to go out and that is because I have 'more important' things that I need to be doing on the internet...

As for leading to social isolation, that would only happen in the most extreme of cases 1 in 50 etc...

The average person has a job which involves interacting with other people (without using the internet)...

Anyway, sorry for the drawn out reply... But summarised, I dont think that the internet leads to social isolation... Nor do thing that it makes tennagers commite sucide and all of the other things that it has been accused of in the past (not in relation to this forum)...

i disagree with the statement because the net has helped me make more new friends than ever, who can help me with things from all over the world, and it has also helped me loads with coursework and things, which will improve my grades.
although its taken for granted by me, its extremely helpful

good point.. so basically the ones who are isolated are the ones that forget that there is a real world out there.. and that the internet is not a replacement for face to face interaction and friendships with real live people!

Yeah I think that other things like playing comp. games escessively are more dangerous, in some way forums like UKL also keep some contact to the real world cause they always refer to it while truely "cyber" things don´t (or have you ever seen things like in Quake happen on your street??? ;-)
That´s why I think the people at UKL can joke about their obvious addiction, we all know that there are more important things out there.
