I just think the best policy in any situation like this is to be honest with the other person. If you explain your feelings fully and truthfully then there is no grey area and you both know where you stand.

there's no easy way to break up with someone. it's always going to hurt, so the best you can do for them is to be honest

That happened to me recently...I think i was just flattered by a great guy liking me rather than actually liking him back. Turned out we didnt really fit. I told him it wasnt working out, but I never really told him my feelings changed because he liked me so much i felt bad. I dont think it could end without someone getting hurt. But my advice is if you want out than dont stay because of pity or because you dont want to hurt him. But be kind about it. Hope I helped.
