I have recently started my nursing training at BCUC in Jan. No one has bothered explaining to me the importance of portfolios, whats to go in them and what they are for.

Please could someone just quickly tell me what a portfolio is for?

    Thanks

basically you start practicing keeping a portfolio during your training as when you qualify you have to keep a professional portfolio as part of PREP (post registration education and practice), which could be requested for audit by the NMC.

what you keep in it is down to the individual really but you tend to have a persoanl profile with you details, education and previous jobs a bit like a cv.

you can then add other stuff that you think is relevant... pehaps practice placement books and assignments. certificates, details of study days and personal reflective accounts. its really what you think yourself there is no right or wrong.

once qualified you need keep evidence of 35 hours of study in each 3 year period... you will probably do way more than this but its good practice to start it at uni.... its to show how you have continued to learn and how such things like reflective practice can keep you up todate in your own speciality... for instance mine if full of gynae, midwifery, family planning, womens health type of stuff., but somebody else might have cardiac etc.

i just keep mine in an A4 folder and got my personal teacher to skim over it every few months and when i applied for jobs i took it to interview although nobody wanted to look .
