Got Caught Smoking by My Mom

Hello,
I'm 17-yr-old guy....

I feel terrible! This is the second time I've been caught... It's 2 AM in the night here... I sneaked outside the house for a cigarette... Came back and found my mom sitting on the sofa waiting for me.... She slapped me in the face... She also said she's lost all trust in me... I feel sick and terrible ... I promised her I wont do it again..... I dunno what to do... PLEASE HELP!! What do I do to gain her trust back???

If you're 17 in the UK, it's legal to smoke. Assuming you're in America, I don't know their laws. If it's legal, she can't do anything.

Great stuff. Don't mean to be cruel but they always find out eventually and it's better that they know. The worst thing you could've done was promise to stop. My mum went nuts, came round eventually though, they always do. Just think, there are worse things that you could be into.

I know ... but she's like "i wont be sending you to uni anymore coz I have lost trust in you" ... "you're lucky I never told your dad about this" ... "there's nothing you can do to gain back my trust" .... :frown: :frown: I feel SICK...

Plus, I am underage smoker... I am 17, I live in Singapore, where the legal age is 18.

Why do you feel terrible? Is it because you don't like upsetting your Mum, or because you were ashamed of smoking? (if that makes sense)

Just reminds me a bit of my cousin, who said she smokes to give her a hard image, (according to her) and then begged me not to tell our Grandma!!!

It depends whether you want to continue smoking or not.

It you want to give it up, then get your mum to come along with you to one of those support meetings where they help you give up or enrol in a programme. That will show her that you're willing to give up and as a result won't do it again.

Good luck!
Well, at the end of the day you are 17! Its legal for you to smoke! She is concerned for your health obviously but you are old enough to make your own decisions. Quitting because she wants you to wont work, you have to want to do it for yourself. Have a chat with her about it once things have calmed down- explain that you would never smoke inside the house/ you are old enough to make your own decisions and you understand the risks. It might not do much, but at least she can try to begin to understand you a little more.

can't you still be flogged in singapore for littering? it's probably best you quit.

Yeah, she will be like that for a start, probably a few weeks. Once she realises that it really isn't that big a deal she will chill. Trust me, my mam was a nightmare!

tell her you are addicted and couldn't help it but are very sorry and will try your best to stop.

1) she feels sorry for you
2) you look good by trying to quit

Oh, and a piece of advice (or a lecture)...

If you aint been smoking long, STOP! Seriously. I stopped last year for a whole year and started again. I am now trying to stop again. It aint easy once you have been smoking for ages, and I am sure that after a few year you will hate it and wish that you never started.
quit.
and start smokin coc, and show her how good u were when u used to smoke tobacco.

seriously, if ur mom is against it, try some better and safer places where u can smoke, if u cant leave the habit. best is to quit and buy lollypops with the money. 17 aint legal age for smokin in asian countries.

The only way to give up smoking, is if you really want to in your heart of hearts. I hope after this incident you will want to give up

Good luck...
Or just move to uni, and she'll never know

Or quit as that's probably better for your health..but saying that makes me feel like a hypocrite seeing as i've been known to smoke...

It seems like she totally overeacted. I mean you had a fag you weren't snorting coke in your backyard...
She'll eventually get over it and Im sure she will send you to college even though you had a cigarette.
don't worry. you'll be looking back and laughing at this one day.

You're 17 and she slapped you?
Next time she will slap you harder, so I'd say quit whilst you're ahead.
