Slim chance of friendships at Uni

Hi! Like alot of ppl I'm very worried about when I go to Uni and how it will be like etc. One of the things I'm worried about is socially: how I'll meet new ppl for friends. Is there almost no chance that I'll be able to make friends as I am shy, not a party person or socialite, don't drink any alcohol at all and don't smoke etc? Do most ppl go to the SU or bars, clubs and pubs for alot of the time. And isn't there alot of booze at Fresher's Week etc?

I wouldn't worry about it i'm sure everybody feels the same. Remember you wont be the only one who doesn't like alcohol and are on the shy side. On freshers week take the opportunity to join loads of different societies so you can meet lots of new people. There will be lots of people starting uni feeling exactly the same as you, don't worry!

I felt exactly like you as I hate clubs and am not a big drinker.
However, you have the same chance at making friends as everyone else. There are loads of societies you can join that don't focus on drinking. What uni are you going to?

Hopefully Cambridge! But I'm in the Lower Sixth atm so haven't applied or been around anywhere etc plus I still have a year to go before Uni:redface: . I'm still worried nonetheless.

just put yourself out there! even if you don't drink it doesnt mean you cant go to the bars.. "i'll have an orange and soda!"... it works out cheaper that way too ... that way you get the same social life as all the drinkers.. apart from the fact you'll be sober.. lol

guarantee you'll feel better in the morning.

Lol that's true!:p: I do get hyper on Pineapple Juice sometimes though!  But I hate pubs and bars etc. Plus I have to be careful with fruit drinks, desserts and yoghurts etc because I have some severe allergies.

if youre planning on being at cambridge i wouldnt worry too much about having to be permanently pissed and partying non-stop to fit in....

Cambridge has loads and loads of societies to join so you won't be left out, you're guaranteed to find people like you somewhere in the university. Is there anything you're particularly interested in?

At Cambridge people go to their college bar because they're cheap and because their friends will be there. People obviously don't go there to get drunk every night, they just go to meet up with people.

Yes there's a lot of alcohol in Freshers week but they purposely arrange alternative events for people how don't like to get wasted, for example when our pub crawl was on they also had late night punting.

Can I ask why the idea of alcohol worries you though? Just because there's lots about and some people are getting drunk, it shouldn't really effect you.

If you have any questions about the Cambridge application process then feel free to ask me.

Are you kidding? I mean there is stuff to do that doesn't involve drinking (as I've just said) but the drinking culture at Cambridge is absolutely epic and whilst you will meet plenty of people who don't drink, you'd be going against the general grain.

Thanks for that^^.:yy: I'll be taking you up on your offer though maybe in a few months time if you don't mind? I take it you are at Cambridge then?

Alcohol worries me because I don't drink it as I don't like how it tastes. Also I don't like what it can do to ppl.

yep there are non-alcoholic things to do in Cambridge and actually we're putting through some policy in the students' union to make sure that we have a real commitment to providing non-alcoholic ents in freshers' week (and non-alcoholic ents in general maybe). As for being shy, there are quite a few shy people in Cambridge and all I can suggest is going to your college bar. It's a nice easy atmosphere where you can just chat and get to know people, or people will chjat to you and get to know you. Just don't worry.

Also the beauty (well some would say it can be annoying at times, but if you're shy I think it helps) of the Cambridge college system is the group of people on your course is a lot smaller to begin with, and your college might start things off by taking you for meals in freshers' week with your subject group. Later in lectures you can meet other people, but it did help me knowing there was a small group to make friends with to start with. (My best friends are on my course in my college) Also you will be living with other freshers (I would imagine this will be the case in most places, even if you don't end up in Cam), so they will also be looking to make friends. There are lots of shy people, so please don't worry too much, not everyone is super-confident, but I think the vast majority of people find friends, even if it takes a few weeks to settle properly.

join up to loads of societies and there are so many people at uni, you will find some of the more quiter people. often parties are organised and i would advise you to go to all of them, even if you don't drink. normally at every party there are a few other quite people and you can get to talk to them and make good friends that way! just don't lock yourself in your room and you'll have no trouble at all.
make sure you have your phone with you so you can swap number of course.
Also, if you like someone in halls, just ask if they want to cook with you one day or something, another great way of making friends as you talk and cook!
don't worry, there are so many people at uni, you'll find some great friends there (as long as you don't sit in your room - seriously, no one will find you there :P )

I'm like you - shy and teetotal. Not the stereotypical student! But according to a BBC survey 1 in 4 students don't actually drink alcohol. There will always be people like you. You just have to find them  And I agree, I don't like what alcohol can do to people and it freaks me out, but that shouldn't stop me from going to bars or pubs, or even clubs (that particular venture is probably what's worrying me most!) because I'm sure if I'm there with decent people I'll have a good time.

Good luck with applying!

Thanks! I've just got to find those ppl first! Though I don't like bars and pubs.:-S I don't really dance but when I do I'm kind of like this :elefant: and to trance/dance music too. Mind you, I only do that on my own as I don't really feel comfortable otherwise. Are there any types of clubs anywhere playing that type of music with that type of dancing?

My impression of uni clubs is that they'll be like that :p:! Plus, people will be drunk so won't pay any attention . Seriously though, I'm sure you'll find people you get on with. That's what everyone says so hopefully there's a grain of truth in it! Oh, and for most unis the accommodation forms ask if you drink alcohol or give you a space to say you don't and for the most part I think they try to match you up. So that might help.

Oh that's good and I hope so! I'm also talking about nightclubs off campus too so what about them also? I am wary of drunk ppl, their behaviour and any untoward behavior anyway though. :-S
