The problem is that engineering is percieved as something that is done by people who look and talk like brains from thunderbirds. i.e. absolute geeks. What needs to be done is these people have got to go they only a small minority and theyre an embarressment to everone. The problem with these geeks is theyre proud to be socially inept morons. A new entrance test is required to rid the community of them.

any ideas??

You are incorrect. What really needs to happen is that, we should take the non-geeky population of the UK, lock them up for a year feeding them a diet of Star Trek and other sci-fi to rapidly erode the social apptitude they once had and grind them down into ideal, self-automating Engineering students. And you will be the first! Mwahahahaha

Geeks are proud for a reason, they tend to have more intelligence in their little finger than the average joe has in his entire foamy brain. :p:
