Do I need to pay student finance when on a gap year?

I have took a leave of absence as I want to work for a year and then return bakc to my uni, but student finance have sent me a letter of what loan they have given to my uni for this year.

Are they able to do that if I'm not in education?
You don't have to pay student finance this year, you need to contact student finance informing them that you're currently on a gap year, what you have to know is that there's no direct communication between student finance and university, they just assume you're still in education, however I don't know why they would pay if you presumably haven't applied to it.
