Bleh, Madingley road isn't as bad as people make out. Cyclists are allowed to cycle on the pavements and it only gets really hairy after Churchill in the 40 zone.
Does this mean pedestrians have to share the footpaths with cyclists? I don't much fancy that, either.

There's normally only a couple, if that, that overtake me using the footpath in the mornings. All the departments up there warn people to avoid the Madingley road.

Well, welcome to the SBR then! The Madingley Road hostels are quite close enough to the West Cambridge site not to need a bike. The quality of the accomodation is probably the best St. John's offers as well.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I've just started as a graduate at St. John's.
Thanks, d750. I'm glad to have found at least one member of the SBR here. Just out of curiosity, whereabouts are you living and what are you studying, if you don't mind my asking?

I've applied for the Madingley Rd hostels, but there's no telling where I might end up. I really hope I won't have to get a bike.
