Shin Pain from Running?

Hi guy's since you all seem quite knowledgable on this kinda thing, i am wondering if u can give me any advice? I've been training for my army RCB thinginy, coming back from a hip injury at Christmas, trying to improve my speed, fitness, endurance and lose some weight at the same time.

However now i have aquired this dull pain in my shins, which aches all the time, but is sharper when going up and down stairs. The pain when pressed feels kind of like a blister when pressure is put on it. If i felx my toes the shin also hurts.

I googled it and it looked like shin splints - but to be honest i only run about 4 miles a day on and off road, and it's not like i'm over training or anything.

Anyone have any ideas, apart from rest which might get rid of it or strength exercises and streaches to improve it - my rcb is on may 2 and i have to be fighting fit

thanks guys

Look towards your running technique, try and land more "flat footed" or on the balls of your feet rather than your hells.

Run on grass or softer surfaces.

Ice after every running session, for 1+hour.

It has to be said, it might sound like a trivial injury but the pain will only get worse and worse, and eventually it could cause a stress fracture of the shin.

Also, if you admit that you have this pain to the army or whatever then they won't allowed you to complete the training.

So you've either got 2 options - keep shut up about it and hope it doesn't become excruciating and then try and recover once you complete training, or not go to this rcb thing on may 2nd(whatever it is).

If you are struggling with your shins now, you're going to be in real pain at RMAS when it comes to the CFTs.

Before we do CFTs the PTI does exercises to stretch the muscles around the shins. This muscles are normally the cause of the problem as they are too stiff. If you suffering, be careful you might get shin splints.

Good luck for Westbury.

SHIN SPLINTSSS you're experiencing a minor form of it. I used to get it too. Best thing to do is stretch your shin muscles(tibilius anterior). Do this by somehow tying a weight to your foot. sit in a chair and raise your foot off the ground...aim you're toe towards teh ceiling and hold it there for a while...relax and repeat. Also...standing on the edge of a stair with you're toes dangling over and pointing your toes up and down..helps. ten minutes everyday and shin ssplints will be gone in no time.

sounds like shin splints definately.

might be a good idea to go to a proper running not, not jjb sports or similar ilk lol, and get them to check out your feet and recommend the right type of shoe for you.

i got my shoes from such a place, and you do pay a small premium for the advice etc but its definately worth it.

It does sound like shin splints; the following advice may help:

- take a break from running (although if you're in training then any time away may set you back)
- put some ice on the area for 10-15 mins, four times a day, to cut down inflammation
- use a supportive bandage to compress the sore area (not too tight) - you can get these from most chemists
-elevate your legs (mush beat me to this one  ) as soon as you start feeling pain (try lying down with your feet on cushions)

Shin splints can also be caused by worn-out footwear, so maybe it's something simple like that. It doesn't sound as if you're over-training, although try to avoid on-road as much as possible.

The good news is that although shin splints are fairly common while you're a "beginner", so to speak (you've presumably been away from exercise for a while with your injury?), it does tend to ease up as you get stronger, so it's mainly a case of building yourself up and dealing with the symptoms until they start to decrease. If they get significantly worse, you should definitely see your GP (you'll be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon and/or physiotherapist who can make sure nothing worse is wrong).

Hope this helps and good luck

I noticed this the other day when I was running on the road, and later on when I was just walking in fairly flat shoes.

It sounds like shin splints to be honest, and they can be caused by various things- like people have mentioned: ill fitting shoes or over-used shoes, running on hard surfaces, or sometimes if your feet have a tendency to roll inwards when you walk normally. Check your shoes (normal ones) to see whether the insides are bent slightly outwards, as this can be a sign that you have over-pronation of the foot.

Try to rest as much as possible and avoid running on very hard sufaces where possible. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do ok though if you take care- you seem to have prepared a lot!
