My friends and parents always tell me not to bend my knuckles and make them 'click', because 'it causes arthritis'. I have always wondered how that clicking noise is produced? Surely it cant be the sound of two bones colliding...that would hurt like hell?! And what makes it so unhealthy?

I think it is something like the bones or the cartilage between the bones moving together that causes the noise.

And I'm not sure about the truth in the arthritis claim, but everyone I know mentions it, so maybe it is true.

EDIT:
Actually, ignore my post and read the first bit of the article in this link:

It's also very antisocial. Don't do it. It makes people want to kill you.
Old wives tail, it's apparantly trapped air excaping from in between your knuckles which is why it tends to feel more comfortable afterwards.

Ahhh... That explains alot.

I crack my knuckles too much. According to my mum, my fingers will become oddly shaped if I keep doing this. But according to her: if you eat too many eggs, you'll become an egg.
So I'm not sure what to believe really:wink:

Yeah, it's not nice. I grew up with my sister cracking her knuckles and I had a made who could do the same thing with his neck and make it crack at will. You'd sort of get a sequence of cracks as he move his head from one side to the other

There is no actual proven link as of yet with craking joints and arthiritis. I can crack most of my joints at the moment including toes, fingers, neck and even my back. lol!

it's not the sound of two bones colliding (that WOULD hurt like hell!) and it's not unhealthy at all... it's to with excess fluid around the joints apparently. ur mates probobly just don't like the noise. at least their not my best m8, she does it herself wit her fingers, wrists and toes (?!) but gives me a *******ing when i do it...
I don't think it'll cause arthritis, you move your other joints in your body just as much and, whilst cartilage may wear down and cause arthritis in later life, it wouldn't be an issue now.

I click my joints aswell, my friends hate it but I really couldnt care less because its the only way to get my joints to not hurt (like every 20 minutes if I keep my joints in the same place, they stiffen up and if I leave them then I get trapped nerves which hurt a lot).
And they dont cause arthritus.....thats just a myth.
hurting the joints perhaps?
ive always had it frm i was a kid, when ever i bend down my knees crack and when i walk you can hear a wee crack frm my ankles i hate it so much but i cant help it. i really hate when people crack there knuckles and neck on purpose. its minging
my god, that sound is just evil :frown: it really really goes through me for some reason. when someone does it, I can hear the sound in my head for about a hour afterwards. makes me feel sick
I can crack my neck at will and it actually releaves pain that otherwise would cause me severe problems, but it does kinda freak ppl out to se you move your head from side to side and hear like every vertebrate click in sequence:biggrin:
I hate it when boys do this, it makes me feel sick!! what is the point!?
i was told it was nitrogen escaping when you cracked your knuckles hehe!

ROFL! If you have Nitrogen in your knuckles I would be very worried maty boy!

Nah it's Carbon Dioxide escaping whne u create a gap by moving your fingers/joints in a certain way.
matey girl actually, but I just said I was told that, not that I necessarily believe it...
