Write something on Early Morning! The Christ Church Poetry competition topic for this year. Such a great thing to write about, so many interpretations.

Don't shudder; my friend has been quoting Lady Lazarus at me on msn all evening! Perhaps I should say it's very Poe; and I do like him.

Well apparently, read my poetry, and get about as far away from that as you can.

It is an art, like nothing else

    You do it exceptionally well

You do it so it feels like hell

You do it so I want to die

    And be born again

But to be frank, and repeat the gift

I am not a wild thing; nor am I sorry

    for myself

The first was as memorable as

    I had wished

Still I wish that I was the benefactor

    And You, not the thief

And that when I fell dead

    from the tree

You had caught me with kid gloves on

Instead of your usual bare skin

Does anyone understand this poem? It’s not for English or anything, but I’d appreciate any insights into the subject matter. I can recognise references to 3 authors- can you guys too or am I wrong?
