Aughh.. hair falling out

I was in the bath last night, and as I was shampooing my hair, I noticed quite a few strands of it were falling out into my hands. I was slightly surprised, but after talking to my mother and sister quite worriedly afterwards, they reassured me that it's quite common for hair to come out while you wash it.

Anyway, I didn't worry about it, until today when I just ran a hand through my hair and lots of strands came out. I did it again, and it happened again. The strands that come out are full strands, not just broken ends or anything and I'm starting to worry as to what could be the cause of it. I'm only 14, so it probably isn't the start of permanent hair loss due to aging and I'm a female. Does anyone know what it could be? I've been on Easter holidays for the past week and a bit, so I doubt it's stress.

It is natural to lose quite a few hairs every day (google it...there's tonnes of info on it) so I wouldn't worry. It's only if you start to notice that it's actually thinning overall that you need to be concerned....so don't stress.

it is natural for your hair to fall out specially after you wash it. also, when you pull your hair when it is wet, there is a higher chance of them coming out since wet hair is weaker than dry hair..

It's just never come out on this scale before..

apparently it can be a dietary thing. it's sometimes a side-effect of things like bulimia due to deficiencies in certain vitamins/minerals, so it's quite possible that it could happen to people who aren't bulimic but aren't having all of the right vitamins.

avoid MSG like the plague! i think one will have 50 hairs a day falling off on average, so i won't worry if i were you.

ahhhhhhhhh the same thing is happening to me too and its freaking me out, I have done lots of research on it, went to the doctors ....twice...ahem.. only to be told there is nothing wrong. Apparently your hair goes through phases where more comes out than grows so the hair may feel overall a tiny bit thinner but this does even itself out eventually after perhaps a few months or maybe up to around 8 months , where less comes out and more grows. He also told me about the usual causes of hair loss like stress etc.......... but after all this I am still not convinced.. I put mine down to paranoia but I genuinely believe something is wrong! ahhhh :frown: x

ah ...... and then I worry about losing hair which just leads to more panic and stress... which wait for it..... causes...... HAIR LOSS!! cannot win!! xx

Don't worry, it will grow back. I mean how many bald women do you see? Baldness is more of a hereditary male thing.

Plus the more you worry the more it happens, so its counter productive.

it also comes with too much stress. i have a friend in the uni who had the same problem last year. after the term ended she noticed that she has bald spots 1 inch in diameter. she went to a dermatologist and had shots around the bald area. the hair grows back again...

need not to worry much

Go to the doctor, talk through your diet, make the changes see if it helps, just because your on holiday doenst mean your not stressed  and maybe wash your hair a little less, maybe less hair product if you use them, and see what happens
Hair loss at 14 is...... rare rare rare... dont worry

It feels a bit thin all over.. but that might just be the haircut. I had it cut about 3-4 weeks ago and it's got a lot of layers. I googled it, and someone did say they lost their hair at 15, but I understand it isn't common.

Thanks again everyone.. I just have this bad feeling that it's going to all come out. I know it's normal to lose hair, but if I run my hand through it, I get lots of strands in my hand, whereas before I got zero.

im exactly the same!!! recently (about a week or so ago) i noticed a lot of hair randomly falling out during the day (ive always moulted a lot but didnt think much of it...some days more will fall out than others etc...) but it hasnt stopped and if I run my hands through my hair i'll get 5/6 strands coming out in my hands which really scared me!! And there seems to me loads more falling out onto my clothes and on chairs when i sit down etc.etc. Ive done a bit of research and am putting it down to a vitamin deficiency, since ive lost about a stone recently and my diet hasnt been fantastic, but am not 100% pacified! Think my hair has thinned out a bit but this is possibly paranoia - its hard to tell!! Are there are specific vitamin or mineral supplements available for hair loss? Or to promote hair growth or something??

maybe you're just molting

I think it's just something that happens sometimes. It happened to me a few summers in a row.

The exact same has happened to me to recently. Various people have jokingly suggested it could just be moulting due to warmer temperatures.. but I think it's more likely to be a diet thing.

I went to the doctors on.. Thursday? And all he said was that it could be stress, and while you may not consciously feel stressed, you are "on zeee interiorrr" (his words ). He said at the end he'd refer me to what sounded like an opthalmist, but they deal with eyes, which makes me think he might have been talking about the headaches I'm getting rather than the hair loss.

I'm going to buy some vitamin supplements- even if they're just those Bassetts ones they always advertise on TV. You mention it could be to do with poor diet, and I agree for me too because frankly my diet isn't that great either.
