Grade6 pass is equal to 25, and it goes all the way up to a grade 8 distinction which is 75

roughly :P
None of my offers included getting ucas points for my grade 8 piano. So unless your going for a music related degree I wouldn't worry about the ucas points for grades 6/7/8.

Top unis dont really do UCAS points, just want particular grades....

Depends what your offer is, whether in grades or ucas points

Check this page here: http://www.abrsm.org/?page=exams/ucas.html

They do in theory count for UCAS points but quite a lot of unis don't base their offers on points, but on grades for subjects. Still, Grade 6 on an instrument is an achievement by itself regardless of whether it counts for any UCAS points, and will enhance your PS.

True. Music exams post grade 5 are very time consuming and require a lot of hard work and talent, always worth mentioning on a PS.
Most serious music courses will expect Grade 8 (sometimes with either a distinction or a merit). Most serious universities won't give you offers in points.

manchester uni in particular are very specific about grades and the level you gain in those grades, especially if you want money from them!

You can get money from them these days? The department there is quite good (and they have a really flash building). Hmmm, I wonder if I could have had some money. I feel poor.

Yeah, it is a good department. Damn, I have a distinction grade 8 (although I don't play anymore). I don't think the workloads is as hardcore as oxbridge, but it should be pretty rigorous.

I'm going too and it actually sounds quite scary :s-smilie:
i'm really looking forward to it.
but i am taking a gap year first so i have to entertain myself academically for another year. i'm sure i will survive.
if anyone has any recommended reading for music degrees.... thanks!

Just to add...you can only add those points on once for theory and once for practical. So, for example, if you have grade 8 distinction on one instrument, 7 dist on another and 6 dist on another, then you only get the points for the grade 8 distinction. However, if you have grade 8 distinction in theory and grade 8 distinction on one instrument, you get the points for those.

Very few universities use the full UCAS points system as far as I know. Southampton is the only uni I applied to that uses them and they specify what the points can be in (300 points from 3 A Levels excluding General Studies including a B in music - equivilant to BBB or ABC or even AAE I believe )
