Does your choice of optional modules matter?

Apologies for being clueless on this, but soon I've got to pick my optional module for next year (just the one, sadly). I've decided I want to do a law module, but does your choice affect your future career prospects in any way? I'm currently torn between Medical Law, Sex, Gender and the Law and Criminology. It doesn't really matter as long as I get a 2:1 in the end, right?

This is just my opinion, so it may count for nothing ....

I'd say the choice is irrelevent because let's face it once you pass the module you forget most of it anyway. Firms must know that. I'd say LPC module choice is far more important.

I'm stuck on my module choice as well. I've narrowed it down to Criminal Evidence, Jurisprudence or Consumer.

Think I'm gona go for Jurisprudence though.

Most people at KCL seem to hate juris, but maybe that's the compulsory factor.

I thought legal theory was compulsory everywhere
Jurisprudence isn't required by the law society or the bar council to make your degree a qualifying one so I doubt it's compulsory in many Universities. It would appear it is compulsory at KCL and I know it's also compulsory at Oxford. Jurisprudence is a course in legal philosophy so it might be more advanced or have a more philosophical focus than some legal theory courses.

isn't jurisprudence compulsory at UCL (2nd year) as well?
btw what exactly does it involve?
Reply 7
Jurisprudence is compulsary at Leeds too.
Back to the main question - when you apply for summer vacs and training contracts firms may look at the electives you have opted for

I chose Jurisprudence and Child I [focuses on the child in the family setting] for my options for next year.

We had an electives fair at our Law Dept today and I asked some of the tutors whether or not taking electives such as e.g. Company Law will be more favourable for the future rather than other modules which you are interested in, such as eg. Terrorism Law. I was told that firms will look to see if you have an interest in their practise areas but that you should choose electives that you are actually interested in. There is no point in taking what you percieve to be 'better electives' if you are going to hate them, or possibly fail.
I myself have a similar problem as I'm torn between several electives (Corporate Finance, French Law, International Law and Company) :frown:

His book has pride of place at Lincoln's? Surely not? It's got pride of place on my MUST BURN pile. I might even make an effigey of him and burn him aswell.

Honestly, the questions were tripe. Hang on, I'll send you them!

Yeah, they held a fair in the Moot Court room with representatives from each module and some from other depts such as Modern Languages. I've decided to do Corporate Finance & Insolvency, International Law and I'm going to have to pay fees to study French since it exceeds my credit limit.
And in response to the above post - I'm at Leeds Uni xx.
In my second year I did Medical and this year am doing Company and Family. Was told during mini-pupillages that chambers dont look too favourably upon modules such as Sex, Gender and the Law, Criminology, etc.
