This sounds pretty dense but if your arms arent moving, ie they hold the fixed bar, is it pointless?

Depends if they are holding it up or holding it on the floor!

I dont understand that reply at all!

I wouldnt have thought so, you still have to use your legs to rotate it! I always though it was pointless to hold the bars, as they got move by my strong legs, and my arms just sort of followed, never liked them anyway.

Cross trainers are pretty pointless no matter what you do.

Reply 4

They can build a sweat and if you assume the correct position it is possible to work your glutes

Reply 5

You can build a sweat from walking.

Yes, but only uphill while carrying weight, on a summers day I find.

Reply 7

I'll have to try that in future.

it's good

Running machines are personally the best form of exercise in the gym

step machines are just hilarious - you get people on them with beautiful calves and fat tummies

Errr...why exactly?

Holding your hands on the bar doesnt work your hands, but it does make u work your glutes and thighs more so I heard.

I used to love the cross trainer as you'd be working out but not feeling like you're doing anything, but I dont like it any more as I cant get a good stride.. you're kind of fixed to the machine if that makes sense.

its low impact cardio excercise.. so if you have any joint problems.. or impact aggravated asthma theyre a good thing

I'm not a big fan of cross trainers, when I am at the gym and I go on them I feel like I am cheating because they don't make me tired.

Try it on the hardest level for 40 minutes. I guarantee you'll get tired.

They burn more calories than the treadmill. It's a great cardio workout. My heart rate sometimes gets as high as 180! I've stopped going though... Too much like hard work!

Well of course I would but I like my excercise to be intense and tiring the whole way through and not something that takes ages to tire me out.

A cross trainer only takes ages to tire you out if you take it easy. If you maintain a high speed at a high level of resistance it tires you out quickly, but not so much that you have to stop. It's also low impact so your knees won't give way by the time you're 30. Cross trainers are some of the best cardio excercise machines. Intense excercise is hard to maintain and therefore crap for cardio (i.e. people doing 5 minutes on a treadmill).
