    Why the hostility?

One of my subject teachers told me about this site, in case I was struggling with coursework and wanted to talk to other students. She said it would be a good opportunity to talk to people who have passed their exams, and are at University. People who are doing well.
So I came on, about a week ago, and I've seen people discussing their academic studies. But I've also seen negativity, and people who just come on to cause trouble, and I wonder... Isn't this supposed to be a learning site? For students? Why are people coming on and trying to pick arguments? I know its only a few people, but why are they trying to cause trouble? I just don't understand it.

Yes, that is its primary use, although there are alot of general discussions on here as well.
Its just that some people, as with anywhere, want to ruin it for everyone else.
The best thing to do is just to ignore them.

If everyone came on here and just agreed with each other all the time, it would get very boring, very quickly.
