Hey, Second year here, Studying SFX for film and television.
Just saying that I had a great first year, I stayed in Orlando (was not too shabby but the noise can be disruptive; earplugs or play some music)
Kitchens are small, the fridges/freezers were also small, make a plan with your flatmates about food.
You might get one cupboard each, I recommend keeping non-perishables in that, keep fresh food in fridge or freezer. I found two slices of bread uneaten and going mouldy in mine. Tinned food is your best friend. Although the hobs are a little fussy and take a while to warm up. My flat had a portable oven cooker in the kitchen (I believe bottom flats get this.) it is small but we still managed to cook cakes and a roast in it. Oh Decorate your rooms, yes cover up that boring brown board on the wall with something like wrapping paper, or find the biggest poster you can and splat it on. Your here for almost a year, change your room around, I moved the bed to the radiator (warmer) and it gives you more floor space for sleepovers/floordrobe. Orlando does have a small garage shop close by, sometimes it sells bread, (crap load of sweets) and quite nice people work there. Whilst here I did not hear about any break-ins, other than the one at the very end when I had left to start my holiday, (some idiot used a bin to keep the main block door open) I did not hear about anything stolen though, seemed they hit a vacant flat.
Ladies, there is an Ann Summers store here.
Nightlife is alright, there are a few clubs, I suggest grouping up before hitting the town at night. Ladies do not go out on your own at night! Try and stay with people you know, the town changes at night, guys drive around in vehicles trying to pick girls up, but if you do find yourself alone, go stand outside a club where there are bouncers, and call a cab home. But I'm a pub person (plenty of pubs), I like to play card games with fellow students and mess around with the Xbox in the SU... If it’s still there, If not I'll offer up my Xbox/games again.
Gym membership could seem expensive, but go for it, when your stressed it’s the best feeling in the world to unwind by taking a dip in the pool.
There are not many clubs, but I'm an airsofter and so are a few lecturers, ask around and you could help make up an airsoft team. There is a woodlands site nearby.
No guns are allowed in Orlando and on campus... Unless your SFX and you made the damn thing. Ask permission first I guess...
There is a TA just down the road from Orlando. So if a Zombie Apocalypse occurs... you’re safer than Hollins.
I really disliked staying at Hollins, the bathrooms are rather shabby but enclosed, rather than the gym style bathrooms in Orlando. Also the ovens were a little slow to work. Big fridges and freezers - good to keep the beer and cider cold (I'm from Somerset, Cider is nice.) Crap long way to walk in the morning, I had to walk miles to get to college once, I decided to go closer to uni and the shops.
If anyone needs any help, I will be arriving on Saturday.
I do not regret going to Bolton, I have been very homesick at times and I live about 4-6 hours away by car (depending on traffic) and it’s a similar time by train.
But it was an experience I would never change (apart from catching fresher flu...)
