Can i lose fat just by doing free weights?

I know it seems a bit of a newbie question but im not a noob .. I read on www.askmen.com that by putting on 10 extra pounds of lean muscle, you can burn 62 pounds of fat a year.

At the moment i do 30 minutes cardio a day and 6 exercises of free weights, 2 opposing muscle groups in supersets. I was 193 pounds and 23% body fat, am now 165 pounds and 14~. I've recently ordered 700g of Creatine monohydrate (which ive used before) and 2 kilos of whey protein isolate.

What i want to know is, if i cut out the cardio, which im not a big fan of admittedly, and get up to 175-180 pounds.. will my body fat sort itself out and just start getting lower and lower IF i maintain the muscles.

Now, i know this sounds stupid, and i do know the benefits of cardio so no rants please, just some straight answers from people who know what theyre talking about.. everyone seems to have very different opinions about this subject.

It comes down to calorie intake Vs calories burned.

If you put on lean muscle, your body will require more calories to maintain itself, if these calories aren't there then it will begin to burn the fat stores. So yes, putting on lean muscle will increase the amount of fat you burn.

However, this will require an extreme amount of nutrition watching. You have to make sure the calories you consume stay exactly the same as they were before added the muscle, you also have to make sure that you eat an increased amount of protein, still ensuring there is no calorie jump in order to maintain the muscle.

Also the amount of fat you burn will be incrediably low for the amount of effort you are putting in.

Imagine you lived in London, and decided that you needed a loaf of bread. You leave the house to walk to the shop, but you take the scenic route taking in all the sights there and back for 3-4 hours when the journey should really only take 15 minutes. You get the loaf of bread, but it took you 8 hours.
