Durham Foundation centre

Hi, I have been thinking about applying to the foundation centre for Maths/ Economics degrees and I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the centre? I'm wanting to know how competitive it is to get in, and the pace/ difficultly of the work?

Give them a phone, they are very helpful. I spoke to someone who then gave me a number for someone who specifically dealt with Law and spoke to him at length. C

I also am wondering this. I applied for Social Sciences with a Foundation Year - wondering how many places there are and how competitive it is? When do they generally give you an answer? (i.e. Conditional/Unconditional offer or decline?).

Thanks!

Hi
I am currently on the foundation course, so I may be able to help. As far as I am aware there are 2/3 students per course, not sure about the entire figures of students who get on the foundation year as a whole. Some of my classes have 30 students, others about 15. But there are quite a few subject areas so don't panic. When did you apply? You may get a slight delay after christmas with the block 1 exams, so it could be the middle of January before you hear anything. Some students have interviews (But are more like chats). It can be a bit of a long process, due to your application then getting sent to the department of your choice. So, Its not fast. I applied in the September 2011 and got an offer in the December.

Don't worry too much, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hi
I am currently a student at the foundation department, I just left a message to another applicant's query which is the same as yours. So hope that helps. Any other questions just sent a message or quote me on the thread.

I have set up a thread for anyone applying to the foundation course at Durham. Its a good way to chat to other applicants and possible class mates. Any more queries, I'm happy to answer

The pace varies, depending on the subject area. I'm taking the arts and humanties modules and I find I can cope fine. I'm not 100% sure about how difficult the work is for the area your interested in, but the department are really helpful if you have any problems. Here is a list of modules for Economics and Maths

Students on the course come from a variety of backgrounds, there are no entry requirements as its a foundation level. But, there are some students who have either studied a'levels a while ago and want to get back into education or students wanting to go on a conversion route. There is usually 2/3 students per degree programme, and there are alot of subject specialisms.

Hope that helps

I got a Conditional a few weeks ago to go onto the Social Sciences Combined Honours Degree with a Foundation Year! Cannot wait. The condition is to get my NVQ Level Two in Business and Administrations (I took a gap year out to do an Apprenticeship after studying a completely different course in Computing and ICT in 2011).

I finish in January actually, good job I've saved up money to keep me going before the course starts on the 1st of October 2013! Just waiting for Durham to allocate me a College so I can send my Certificates upon receiving them

What course are you on? Also, is the Foundation Centre in Durham City? If so, where roughly is it in the City?

I am currently on the Theology progressing route, but I take the art and humanities modules at the foundation centre. Some of the modules I take are shared by the social science students, and they are pretty good. The foundation department is a five minute walk from the town centre, based at Hild and Bede College. Leazes Road runs alongside the college, so its pretty central. Which college did you choose?

I did not chose a specific College, so therefore they are allocating me to one of their choice. Ah, sweet - not that far away then!

Yeah, they share modules, so I've heard - I'll be taking some English Modules from the Arts and Humanities side of things for sure.

strangely enough the subjects I enjoyed the most are the social science related modules (Anthropology and Cultural Studies).

Thats what I was told when I had my interview last year. It doesn't seem a lot, but when you think of all the students on the foundation year, its quite a lot.

I guess its what the faculties are able to give to students on the foundation year. My department (theology) only gives places to 64 students which is quite small. Some students do find that they change their program while they are on the foundation year.

Also, I spoke to the theology department which helped before I applied.

Sorry to like but in, but I noticed you said 3 students per course; does this man 3 students for every foundation course, i.e 3 students for mathematics with foundation, 3 students for social sciences, etc?

Thats what I was quoted by Ian, who interviewed me. Not 100% sure with social sciences, because there are so many areas it covers (psychology, criminology etc). I found that at Durham City on the arts and humanities there is about 2-3 students on each course route, but that could be different this year so don't quote me on the 2013 entry.

Some universities have to limit spaces for students (otherwise they get fined). The foundation department is small compared to other departments at the University.

Don't panic:smile:

Ah it's fine - I've already got an offer for the foundation social sciences; to pass my NVQ, which I already have. I'll just need to send them the certificate once I receive it myself.

Can't wait.
