student life in edinburgh vs leeds (spanish course)

a friend of mine is caught between leeds and edinburgh to study spanish.. can anyone give any info about life in either city.. i know theyre both difficult to compare directly as i can see the merits of both. edinburgh - small city, good festivals etc.. leeds - good for clubbing, shopping.. can anyone see any overall positives which will make one better than the other cos she really cant decide! thanks in advance.. and rep for good answers xx

i'd definately say edinburgh, its a much more pleasant city to live in than leeds, the buildings are beautiful and the city does have a hell of a lot of shops, tell her to check out princes street (about a mile long street outside waverley station). edinburgh also has a good clubbing scene but has the added advantage of the finge festival in the summer too. edinburgh is a much more cultural place (big café culture, lots of museums and art galleries) and its got lower crime rates than leeds, which in some areas can be really rough (one of my friends who's at leeds met got mugged outside her flat).

although edinburgh is a more expensive city to live, its generally regarded as one of the best places in the country to live, it was once voted best place to live in the world. by all means leeds is a great student city too, but it hasn't got a patch on edinburgh. edinburgh is one of those places you go to and feel sad to leave, i instantly felt at home their.

of course, these are only my opinions, best thing to do is that your friends goes and visits them both to see which she likes best.
well i am considering going to Leeds or Salford, and Leeds is definately a better place cos it has everything happening and its a great place for studends to go- after all- u r only young once!

Hi Crazeeeeeeeeee. I would choose Leeds over Salford any day becuase:

a) The Univerisity of Leeds has a much better reputation than Salford;

b) Leeds has a better social / student life than Salford;

c) Salford is a very, very rough area. Apparantly, it has the highest crime rate in the UK.

Both Leeds' extremely good reputation and good social life contribute to the fact that The University of Leeds is the UK's most popular university for the second year running!

i'd mainly agree with voodoo doll. Also Edinbrugh is not a small city, the only city which really makes it feel small in comparision is London.

Definitely Edinburgh, better academic reputation, more prestige, nicer area to live, lower crime rates, I'd imagine.
