Question about Pembroke (Oxford) and the room types

The rooms are split into 4 bands A-D.

I will hopefully (if i get the grades) be going to Pembroke next year and was wondering what type of rooms i should go for.

If anyone has pictures of what the various rooms are like it would be most appreciated. Or just a brief description.

I've seen two types of rooms there.

One was by the Chapel Quad, (one of the doors on your left as you left the hall would lead to the staircases with these rooms in). This was a stunning room that i was lucky enough to stay in during my interviews. Which band room was this?

The other room was reached by walking from the hall along the left side of the chapel quad and through a small gate/arch on the left. This led to a row of rooms, with each staircase sharing some bathroom facitlities. The rooms themselves each had a wardrobe a sink and low ceilings. W
Which band room was this?

Would you suggest paying more for the better rooms?

Also when do you try to get the rooms (assuming rooms are on a first come first served basis).

Anythign else?

Cheers

Tom

Hey Tom, i'm off to Pembroke in October as well. I stayed in a Grade D room while i was there, it was lovely. Really big, an ensuite bathroom, loads of storage etc..but it is £147 a week :frown: I have a friend who is studying there currently (she is in a D room), she says A rooms are literally box rooms and can be really cold. However, the difference between B-C rooms is not that much.
Tom what subject you got an offer for? Strangely i think i met you at the interview.

Am at Pembroke now and can tell you that the second type of rooms you mentioned are either band c or b depending on which room you saw. The En suite ones are band D, which while being fairly expensive are nice, and having your own bathroom is an absolute god send! The rooms in the MAC (big ugly building in North Quad) are very "functional" but not really that nice, these are between band A and C. I would definately recomend a D band if you can afford it, if not go for a B as there is little to choose between B and C. However all the rooms are being re banded during the easter vac.

As for how they are decided, you apply for the rooms after you get your results and you normally get the band of your choice.

Hi,
I went on a shadowing scheme last year and i stayed at Pembroke for a few days.
To be honest i thought the place was a bit of a dump, not your typical picture of Oxford. My room was tiny, and some of the rooms that i saw students staying in were not much better!(I think they gave me the room nobody else wanted!!)The guy and girl i was shadowing said Pembroke was the poorest college.Dunno if its really true.
But....that would not have put me off studying there. The students at Pembroke are top people, very very down to earth and they all seem to know each other (and it is quite a big place). The only ones that dont socialise that much are the ones that stay in their rooms and smoke weed all day. They only ever come out to make a pick up!U lot have made an excellent choice IMO.But do everything you can to get the type of accomodation you want as im guessing they'll be in high demand and short supply.

Sukh.
Quinbrakes,,, I'm studying PPE, Erm, had just turned 18 when i went down for interviews and am quite short (about 5'5)

Thanx for all your replies as well

Pembroke peeps- any of you received a Pembroke pack yet? I thought they came in July but it appears other colleges are sending them out now. I think it may also depend on whether one finalised their decisions thru' UCAS. Tho' Oxford will be my first choice, I want to wait and see whether LSE actually give me an offer! What room types do peeps think they will choose?
Heard nothing from them yet. Keeps having nightmares that I imagined it all. Was gonna go for band C rooms but if there isnt much difference between B and C im not sure its worth the extra.

I didn't get my stuff from 'Broke till about July...Don't wprry if you don't hear anything before then! As i have said, they are re-evaluating the room bands, so there will be a difference between B and C, but it will now also be down to location as well as size...
Anyone have some pictures of the various types of rooms?

Or would anyone take some and put them on the net, it would be really helpful if you could.

Seriously? Is this for all the colleges? I have been made an open offer and was wondering how they would allocate a room to me! So you actually chose what type of accomodation you want AFTER the results are released?

Definitely agree!

And also a silly question --- Do boys and girls live in separate buildings? Or same one but different floors, or what?

Another one -- I'm taking a Chinese zither (an instrument), but not sure if there'll be enough room, and since I'm from China, I didn't go to the interview so had no idea how a room is structured (excuse my poor wording).

Well, since I need to get a visa, I wrote to Pembroke for detailed information of my course and accomodation. They replied by saying that the pack won't come out until mid-May.
