Braces pain - please help!

Everytime I have my brace adjusted (every six to eight weeks) it hurts so much for about five days afterwards. It's made ten times worse when I eat, and sometimes it becomes unbearable. I think I just have really sensitive teeth. I take painkillers when it happens, but they don't seem to work very well.
I'm particularly worried because my exams are coming up and I'll be having the brace adjusted right in the middle of them. I can't afford to let toothache ruin my exam performance!

Any advice guys? xx

Brace pain sucks! I suggest getting your brace adjustment arranged for after your exams and avoid any visits 5 days prior to your exams... Lots of paracetamol should help slightly.....(when i mean lots..2! dont overdose!)

Go to a healthfood shop and buy some herbal remedies like arnica juice or capsules...ask the shopkeeper!

If all else fails...talk to your head of examinations at school! Good luck! the braces should be off soon and you'll have lovely teeth and itll all be worth it!

I share your pain there, I had braces for 3 years. They caused immense pain when tightened and ulcers. I used to stock up on pain killers and wait a few days before they settled down. Not much else you can do.
Maybe explain to your orthodontist how painful it is and ask for tightening to be rescheduled after exams.

Good luck

Btw why does this post need to be anon- the problem really isn’t embarrassing

Theres not much you can do, its pretty natural to get them. Just try not to worry about it.

I sympathise too- I had mine on for about four years, and I remember how much the tightening hurt. You're doing the right thing by taking painkillers, and also if any ulcers develop after the adjusting, make sure you have some of that brace wax which makes sharp ends less painful.

Talk to your orthodontist to see if they can reschedule your appointment, or if that's not possible, talk to your teachers (if it's an internal examination) or the exam co-ordinator at your school (if it's an external examination) and certainly in the first instance they should make allowances for you.

Good luck, and explain the situation to your orthodontist.

Yeah, unfortunately it does hurt for days afterwards :frown: Worth it though

What they all said.
I've been there too, it sucks! I used to cry at the pain whenever they were tightened. Definitely try and get the tightening rescheduled for after exams.

I agree the pain is horrible. I had my braces on for 3 years. it was an amazing feeling when they came off

However in the last year my teeth have moved back :frown: which is really upsetting after years of pain. The orthodontist said it was inevitable and he couldnt do anything. And apparently now my only option is to go private and pay hundreds of £ to fill in the gaps where my teeth moved back.

That's weird. They shouldn't move back that drastically. Did you wear your retainer for the amount of time you were supposed to?

How do you stop your teeth moving back after you've had your braces off?? Surely there must be some way to avoid it. I'm due to have mine off soon and I cannot bear the thought of them moving back, leaving me with gaps, after I've endured the treatment!!

My teeth are slowly moving back to how they were! It's really annoying because i waited years for nice straight teeth and went through the pain for them :frown: I wore my retainer for as long as i was told - made no difference!

You normally wear a retainer for at least a year, usually two years. For the first 6 months or so you wear it all of the time (apart from eating), and then after that only at night.

I think part of the reason mine are moving is because of the wisdom teeth! If yours are out maybe you will be ok

Well you have to wear a retainer, I did, for a while but hated the fact i got a lisp so got the pee taken out of me at school :frown: then i just was told to wear it at night.
My ortho said that as my bones were still growing and soft thats why my teeth moved back ( not as bad as they were ) but i am self conscious about them again.

Do you mean because your wisdom teeth are there, or because they are growing?

And six months?? My friend only had hers on for like three months full time.

My teeth started moving as my wisdom teeth started growing.

Ah well that's ok then coz my wisdom teeth are already grown.

Do you always get a lisp when you wear a retainer?

Nope, I did slightly with the one I had before my fixed brace, but the one I have now just encloses your teeth only, so doesn't affect speech.

I was told to wear my retainer all the time for 4 months and then only for half a day for an additional 2 months. I did this and my teeth still moved back. They're not as bad as they were before, but they're not perfectly straight anymore which is really annoying. I don't know if everyone needs the same amount of time wearing a retainer, but from my experience, 6 months just isn't enough.

Can you not get your brace appointment rescheduled? If not get a good strong paracetamol from your doctors take one before you go in and take one when you come out and hopefully that should ease the pain
