    1. The quarter in a city, chiefly in Italy, to which the Jews were restricted.

    2. transf. and fig. A quarter in a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited by a minority group or groups, usu. as a result of economic or social pressures; an area, etc., occupied by an isolated group; an isolated or segregated group, community, or area.

I had a look in my OED and it says - 'origin - perh. from Italian getto 'foundry' (because the first ghetto was established on the site of a foundry in Venice)'

I do get out to places you would fear to tread young child. This year alone, I've gone to Peckham, Brixton and Elephant and Castle - supposed ghetto's. They just aren't, there are nice parts in all three.

Yeh, I have family in Upper Tooting, so I pass through it regularly.

It's a shithole.. not a ghetto though. It's a safe place to walk through during daytime and there seems to be alot of community activities.
