definitely go for Brown. Warwick doesn't have the international reputation of Brown, I can see that and I'm British, I'm not at all surprised Americans on this site haven't heard of it.

Where I live, many people have neither heard of Brown nor Warwick. I don't think Brown's reputation is exceedingly superior to that of Warwick, but it probably has a better 'oomph' factor amongst people in-the-know.

I'd go with brown personally, but for different reasons than just the academics. I see the U.S having more opportunities as far as employment goes than the united kingdom. If you were educated in the states employers will view it positively. Also, I've got a couple friends from high school who headed off to brown and they've been having a good time there.

I think it certainly is. It enjoys a great reputation, esp. in Europe and Asia.

Did you have your eyes shut and ears plugged or something?

Nope. I was doing two terms at Oxford. Only met Oxford and Oxford Brookes students in the city. Weekends in London, where I met LSE/UCL/King's/SOAS etc students. No one ever mentioned Warwick, or if they did, I didn't notice or pay attention.

The point is, if I've never heard of it, Americans who haven't been to the UK definitely haven't. There are unis just like that in the US too, that are good but not internationally known. Doesn't mean the uni isn't good though

They said that wanna live in the UK/Europe so for this individual it doesnt really matter.

Having said that Id go with Brown - probably cause I live in the UK.

Then again culture - I would more likey be happy and do better at warwick

Easily Brown:

Better international rep (it's definitely true);
Much more liberal and artsy;
Warwick is new, near Coventry, and ugly;
Brown girls are hot!

Such an easy choice. :smile:

How are people arguing about Warwick having equal rep in America as Brown?!?!

It's just ridiculous: unless you live there, or spend a lot of time there, you don't know. The facts that Brown a) is in America and b) was featured on The OC alone would conspire to make it better known to Americans than Warwick.

I think TSR rates Warwick far too highly ... especially on the I+F forum - don't get me wrong, it's a very good university, but not IMHO an exceptional one.

Reply 28

Notice how Harvard didn't feel the need to appear on the OC.

I strongly agree...I even rejected their "flagship" course- MORSE.

I dont think they're anything special. Certainly, from the 2:1 Warwick standard students I have met, they are not the brightest bulbs. A couple evem bug me with macroeconomics help near enough every time I use MSN messenger.

Oh, did Brown ask to appear on The OC? Didn't realise that.

Anyway, it's irrelevant; no one disputes Harvard > Brown, but we're discussing how well-known/reputable Brown and Warwick are, and being heavily featured on a program as popular as The OC makes a hell of a difference.

Someone just posted in I+F that Warwick Economics is the 'third best course in the country.' :eek: I sometimes wonder if Warwick's marketing employees post on here, pretending to be students!!! :wink:

I'm at (was at maybe?) warwick... its not particularly exceptional overall in terms of student quality, but then i wasnt that impressed with some oxford students either.

Tis a pretty place, and a bubble in the middle of nowhere. I'd say its good, but certainly not "exceptional." However the business school could very well become so.

It's worth noting that a lot of the IB's seem to camp out at warwick 24/7... maybe they just like the air? But it's definately true... warwick has a good standing with the IB's.

I saw the course somewhere rated second equal, which is fairly impressive given how new the university is. League tables have all sorts of problems with them, I know, but they generally seem to get most of the ones at the top right.

I imagine so, given the amount of publicity they were receiving. Thinking about it, the OC did suddenly seem to get better around the time they started all this 'college' stuff. Before that it had managed to be utter crap for that last one and a half series'.

Popular utter crap, though :wink:

Warwick's an excellent university, as good as Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, York etc with an exceptional reputation in Maths, Economics, Politics and probably some other stuff.

The fact that it's established such a reputation with employers in 40 years speaks for itself. I don't know why some people on here are so easily dismissing it as "not exceptional"; within the UK it's one of the best and its international reputation is growing. In Asia it's well known.

Reply 38

Let's end this nonsensical discussion. Both are top universities. The US folks will argue in favour of Brown, the UK folks will argue in favour of Warwick. It's plain silly if you ask me. What's been established is that both universities have an international reputation and will get you a job if you excel in your degree programme. Don't agree? Good, keep that as a personal opinion.

Reply 39

Ok Knogle firstly, calm the hell down!

Secondly, a lot of UK 'folks' actually argued in favour of Brown.

Thirdly, Warwick hasn't got nearly as good an international reputation. Yes, it is an up and coming place. Yes, it has done well to get where it has today. Yes, lots of British employers regard it well. But let's face it, Brown is probably better (and, importantly, better viewed) than Warwick in many ways.
