I'm starting Strathclyde in September, and I'll be 19. Took a year out because I'm a big ill person, ha... But you're not going to be alone, there are a lot of older students. When I started uni last year, I actually felt quite young at 18.

There are one or two (very few) who start at sixteen. Most will be 18, maybe about a third will be 17. There will be a decent number of 19 year olds and a few 20 year olds (god knows why).

You won't be unusual but you might get a bit annoyed at some of the immature wee buggers you can find in halls.

I've been thinking this age thing a bit because I'll be 19 when I start at the uni. It's the normal age to go to uni here but I hope there won't be problems with having likeminded friends even though local students might be a bit younger.

I've heard some horror stories about immature teenagers but I try to avoid having prejudices before entering the uni and seeing what it's like by myself. Surely there will be so many different kinds of people that everyone will fit in and get friends etc.

I'm going to be 17 until January of first year! :frown: Most of my friends are gonna be 17 or 18 but I know quite a few 19 year olds who are just starting 1st year in Sep. Just wondering if being 17 is a big problem? Going out to pubs etc? How strict are things when it's all students? Thanks

Depends where you're going. Pubs are unlikely to be much of a problem, nightclubs maybe more so. Students' Unions will let you in and I don't know of any that do a very good job of enforcing the legal drinking age.

I had no problems at all, but then I'm told I look quite old.

Ill probarbly be going to Aberdeen in september, but being an english student and having had a gap year ill be 19 when i start. What worries me is that everyone will be a lot younger than me, what with the scottish system being different. Will everyone else be starting at 17 or even 16?

I'll be 27 when I start at Aberdeen after the summer.

I'll be 20 going on 21 when coming to St Andrews in september. In many countries (for example Sweden where I come from) people don't start before they're 19 (simply because we're still in what corresponds to high school) and if taking a gap year or several gap years you're evidently going to be 20 or more - so it's not that weird or uncommon really. Lots of people take gap years, work for some time, switch between unis and have to restart year one etc so there's no need for you to worry. There will most probably be people from different ages wherever you're going.

All the people I know from Finland, Germany, Greece etc are mostly 20. None of them are 18-19.

What's age anyway.

a number indicating how long you've been living.

I'll be seventeen for the best part of first year - I'm not 18 till next April - but I'm not too worried about it. I look older & I can get into pubs/bars without a problem anyway. Nightclubs may be a problem, though.

Gee, that would make me 255 whatever crazy unit is used to define this 'age'.
