Weight and Fat Content

I've recently been worrying about my weight, i'm 17 male, 6'1" and i weigh 13st 2lbs. That in itself is bordering the possibility of becoming overweight according to BMI. But i was wondering because my scales measure fat content and ithey say that i am around 20% (Avg. sometimes as low as 17% sometimes as high as 22%) and i thought that 20% was alright for a fat percentage? Should i be worried? Do i need to eat less or something?

Also i use weights and so i was wondering whether there was a more accurate method which takes into account muscles mass as well as fat.

That sounds like a pretty ideal weight for a guy who is 6'1" and works out.

I'd have thought your weight was ok BMI wise (especially if you're quite 'buff')- im suprised you're saying it's near to overweight. I'm 5'1" and weigh 9 1/2 st- I'd have thought a 6'1" guy would be fine at 13st!

Fat percentage is a bit high for a guy- I think 11-15% is normal, 20% is more like what a woman ought to be (but don't quote me on that). But then those scales aren't very accurate anyway. If you exercise and eat healthily then I wouldn't worry about it- you certainly don't sound overweight.

Sounds like you're on the thin side for 6ft 1 to me. I'm about 15.5 stone at 6ft 2. Guess its cuz I'm a fatty though.

According to a website i'm using, it says my BMI is 24.3, and overweight is 25, i would only have to gain 6 or so pounds and it would be overweight

Hmmm strange. Like I said before, your weight sounds fine- if someone your height told me they weighed less than you do I'd be really suprised and expect them to be all skinny and gross. You sound fine; big, talls guys = good.

your weight at that height could be reasonably buff, or it could certainly be quite fat. Post a pic if you want us to call you fat/not.

The scales should not be trusted. 20% is high though, if its accurate. Judge your bf% by the mirror (you dont need an accurate number, just look and decide if you want it lower or not).

Reply 11

Doubt it is 20%, how can a pair of scales determine how much fat you have on your body?

Reply 12

Yeah i've been reading up on the scales and i hear they're pretty useless. I checked some body fat calculator online using other dimensions and it put me closer to 15%

I also checked some stats, my waist is avg, but chest, thighs and hips over avg. I'm putting that down to muscle, too much going on atm to be worried about weight.

Ta for input

The BMI was worked out in America with tests done on women! However it varies and really all that matters is your cholestral and your overall body fat, not your BMI. Remember muscle weighs more than fat! Its a proven fact! Im classed as overweighjt through BMI but im pure muscle! My doctor said it was fine and that i looked great so dont worry! Im sure your fine!
