Headache remedies *other than* paracetamol and aspirin?

I've been getting an awful lot of headaches recently (and it's been going on for months). This past week, I've taken paracetamol every day since Tuesday or Wednesday. It's only been two tablets each day, but on the packet it says something about how I should see the doctor if I've been taken them for three days or more in a row. I've got an appointment anyway on Thursday, so there's no point in getting an earlier one.

I know I'll probably have headaches for the rest of the week until then (no idea why I get them, but I suppose I'll talk to the doctor about that), but I don't fancy relying on paracetamol. Mum's worried I take too much, and I'm trying to withstand the pain, but sometimes it just gets too much and I have to take them you know? The headaches are always at the front of my head and it hurts to look up, read/go on the computer, etc. So...I'm just wondering if there's any natural ways to get rid of headaches, without the pills? I've tried sleeping, but obviously I can't do that during work or college. Also, the last time I saw the doctor (almost five weeks ago), I told her about the headaches, and she told me to keep taking the paracetamol. But not as often as this, surely?

Thanks very much!

Have you tried putting something cold on your forehead? And have you had an eye test recently?

Yep Eye test is a good idea. Also keeping hydrated is essential, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
I have glasses now, which I wear (it's for long distance reading, and my problem's only very mild). I was told to go to the opticians by the doctor, because I kept having migraines, but was told my problem wasn't bad enough to cause the migraines. That's when I went back to the doctor and was told to continue taking paracetamol for my headaches.

How long do I keep the cold press on for?

I'll second the water thing; headaches are usually the result of dehydration... and your spinal cord shrinking and pulling on your brain, or something like that.

I've had the same headache for 3 months and 21 days now and the doctor hasn't helped at all.
Ditto with the eye test and water.

Also - my Dad is into all this "power of the mind" spiritual malarky and he always offers this advice: sit down in a quiet place. Close your eyes. Concentrate on your headache. Not on the pain, but just its existance. Focus on exactly where it is, think all around it (if that makes sense - like you're working out its size and shape with your hands). Don't force it, but it should start to melt away.

I know it sounds crazy, and if you go into it thinking "this isn't going to work" then it won't. Takes a bit of getting used to as well. But it actually does work.
Have you tried the 'forehead' roll-on? It hs menthol in it, and it's really effective at getting rid of headaches

If you suffer from migraines, is it possible for you to visit an osteopath? My brother visited one, and after 4 sessions, his migraines were cured, as migraines can be linked with neck and back problems... Granted, it can be quite expensive...
I think I can actually see that working (the mind thing).

try massaging your scalp (or get someone else to do it for you) for 5 minutes or so. might work
My sis had a continuous headache for about 3 months...she had MRI scans, CAT scans, full body xrays the whole caboodle - the docs eventually decided it was a virus and it did go away so have hope!
Lots of water, lots of rest... and see a doctor if you're on any sort of medication, because that could be doing it... I know people who've had migraines as a result of antibiotics or the pill (even if you've been taking it for months)

If you're under stress at the moment, try and de-stress - relaxation will probably help.

I was gonna say problems with your eyesight - if you need a stronger lens on the glasses or something. But if you've seen the optician about it already, then I guess not.

Would the Pill cause migraines if it was the mini-Pill? I had a migraine or two whilst on the combined Pill, so they put me on the POP (Cerazette). Apparently it was the oestrogen (SP?) that caused the migraines back then.

I'm not sure to be honest - I'm no expert... might be worth going to see a doctor about it, just to make sure
Okay then, cheers! And thanks everyone, for your suggestions! I'll be trying some out!

I was on the mini pill coz the comined pill gave me migraines - according to my gynaecologist the mini pill should not cause migraines due to the lack oestrogen

Lots of good advice given above incuding keeping hydrated. I would also suggest checking your posture - if you spend alot of time at desks/computers and sit poorly this will cause the muscles of the neck and shoulders to become very tight leadng to a tension headache. If this is the case, check your posture, and consider placing a warm hot watter botle (wrapped in a towel) and placing it on your shoulders and neck which should help relieve the tightness - and if you know any that can give massages has them to have a go
Ibuprofen or codeine!

I'll second ibuprofen. I get migraine headaches occasionally and it helps more than Paracetamol.

Codiene is a good painkiller for virtually anything, but is usually mixed with Paracetamol in over-the-counter medicines, which you are trying to avoid.

4Head (the menthol stuff) has never really worked well for me, but my friends seemed to like it.

And if all else fails, theres always Paracetamoxyfrusebendroneomycin.

Paracetamoxyfrusebendroneomycin.

There are cures for everything from AIDS to public lice, in....

But yeah, ibuprofen usually works wonders for me. You could also try Tylenol (can be bought on ebay as it's an American product). They are basically paracetamol tablets BUT two of my friends who took them in America have both INSISTED that it's some sort of amazing painkiller drug.

It can cure the common cold and being struck by lightening.

Some nasty side effects though....

As for Tylenol, I would be careful about putting anything I bought off eBay into my mouth. It's just regular paracetamol, or Acetaminophen as the yanks call it.
Technically acetaminophen is the chemical name, as it contains an acetyl group, and amine group, and a phenol ring, should any chemists be interested.

Yeah, I've been having persistant on and off headaches for about a week now, I phoned NHS Direct because some of them were kinda unbearable and they told me to see my doctor on Monday and keep up with the paracetamol or cocodamol, and to keep hydrated.

Cocodamol is proabably better than paracetamol because it has the added codeine, and you can take it with either ibuprofen or asprin. I also saw that there's now a brand name codydramol that you can get OTC, which is even better but looks expensive.

However, if you can, try not to over do it on the painkillers, because you'll end up with rebound headaches.
