Arghhhh! Friends! I Don't Konw Where I Stand

I'm a hetro guy, 21.

I this friend, but, well, I don't know where I stand with him... i.e. how good friends we are? Would it be werid if I asked him straight out?

We get on really well, can talk about all kinds of personal stuff, generally keep in touch, on and off, when away at uni (we live in the same home city), though it's mainly me making most of the effort and him replying to me, he never really initiates contact. We spent quite a bit of time together at easter though, and he's even asked me to go visit him at uni in a couple of weeks, before exams start... I don't think he's ever invited any of his other 'home city' friends to see him at uni.

I think that says we are pretty good friends, but I'm not sure because I feel like it's me always making most of the effort. If we were proper friends, wouldn't he make more effort? I just want to know where I stand with him, because I don't want look stupid by thinking we are better friends than we are, and quite honestly, I also don't want to waste my time.

So, would it be werid to ask him? If so, how should I do it - what should I say?

hmm...why not "try not trying" - if that any makes sense - for a while and see what your friend does...maybe he just takes you for granted...and then if you don't initate anything for a while - perhaps he'll initate contact with you...if he doesnt after like 2 months ask him "hey whats up...what have you been up to...why haven't i heard from you?" or something to that extent...
