I suppose what we have to bear in mind is that while we've slogged our guts out over our dissertation work, it's baby stuff to them - i.e. very simple and probably doesn't take them long to read.

I had two lecturers read over mine and they still managed to find spelling mistakes etc. However mine was only 5000 words in length!

By reading selected parts and getting a general feel for it, perhaps.

My dad's a Professor, he mainly does MSc and PhD, but he definitely reads everything, and I think they're at least 20,000 words. My mum does BSc, and she reads it all, but probably isn't as thorough as dad. I think thats more his personality though, he does everything properly.

Well if you are missing a whole appendix, they are likely to notice that, even if they are just scanning.
