Did you know there are 5 types of abortion?

I have just been revising for Biology A Level and have discovered that there are 5 kinds of abortion a woman can have! I am quite clueless when it comes to the topic of abortion, it is a very controversial subject and everyone has their own thoughts on it. But what disturbed me the most was one method of abortion that is the only option from 16-24 weeks. Its called Prostaglandin injection, and basically an injcetion of this solution causes contractions in the mother which kills the fetus. But instead of other methods where the fetus can be sucked out with a pump, or scraped out with a knife, the mother has to have an induced labour and give birth to the dead fetus because it is TOO BIG. This made me feel quite horrified because surely if the fetus is that big, then it's actually like a real baby!! Apparently this type of abortion is highly distressing for the mother...i cant believe that this happens....:frown: i think it's quite wrong and that the abortion legality thing shld be reduced to 18 weeks, because then the fetus doesnt feel any pain...did u know this happened?

If you miscarry after 16weeks you have to be induced to go through labour and pregnancy. I Was in hospital with my ex girlfriend when she went through it all. as much I hate/hated her, It was terrible watching her go through that.
Um, do you think women get those kinds of abortions because they think "Oh hey, wouldn't it be a walk in the park to give birth to a 20 week old dead fetus"? It's not like they do it for the fun of it.

If you can think of a better way to abort a 16-24 week old fetus, I'm sure the medical world will be glad to hear of it.

Whats with the sarcasm!? I said i think maybe the laws shld be changed to 18 weeks in which case that method of abortion wldnt happen, unless its for medical reasons. No need to be rude about it, when its you who didnt read my post properly!!

The point is, although a surgical procedure may not be pleasant to hear about, but it's still necessary, given the reasons that women get abortions at that time. It's more important to effectively get rid of the fetus with minimal risks to the woman than to not offend your sensibilities.
i doubt very much that its anything to do with my sensibilities. The pro Life campaign have campaigned very hard to get the law reduced to 18 weeks because it has been proved that after 18 weeks the fetus can feel pain. If you're pro choice, then fair enough, but with respect you have to accept there are different view points on this and that other people have a right an opinion.
They are interesting, and obviously very difficult questions, but the fiercely pro-choice side of the argument can sometimes be quite illogical. I have heard people advocate abortion right up to the end of the pregnancy - literally maybe a week before the due date - if the baby is going to be born disabled for example. I doubt anyone would advocate killing a newborn child because it is disabled. Is there really that much difference between a newborn and a foetus 1 week before birth?

Then again anti-abortion campaigners are often equally illogical and can see no ethical difference between an abortion at 3 days and one at 23 weeks.

It's a difficult issue.

The fetus can feel pain, and it is for this reason that in late term abortions it is usually killed first before delivery. It's not nice at all, but it's also extremely rare. Most abortions happen before 12 weeks, and ones after 20 weeks are almost all on the grounds of fetal abnormality. The Down's syndrome test (and a couple of others) are not accurate until 20 weeks, so there has to be some legal provision for that.
Precisely. I agree. It's only that some people don't seem to listen to other opinions that I even had to post that last post but then, there we go.

Erm, no it hasn't. That's a theory.
you realise that if you go private you can have an abortion at 7 months

I'll do one round the back of the pub for a packet of chilli nuts and a lager top.

Actually pain is more psycological, cant remember where I heard it but a foetus cant feel pain as we do because it cant associate it with an event of trauma, so it would feel a sensation but would not be able to identify it as pain.

I am fine with abortion so long as there is good reason.

Not legally you can't. Unless you actually would DIE if you had the baby, or it would be horribly severely disabled.

Define horribly disabled? The whole abortion argument revolves around peoples definitions of the reasons.

How did people not know there were different types? What happened to sex education in schools? Of course they need a different method for, say, very early abortion which can be aborted chemically, and killing and vacuuming out larger foetuses (crude as that sounds that's what they do).

I don't really think disability is a reason to abort a baby- by getting pregnant you're kind of committing yourself to the possibility that you will have a disabled child. If people can't deal with that then maybe they ought not to be having children. Or maybe, instead of conceiving and then killing a child, they ought to think about giving some poor kid in a home a chance to have a loving family. My two cents.

Yeah I agree, the world is terribly over populated and there are so many children that need a home.

I am disabled and it could be argued that my life would have been intolerable. Fortunately I am here and was never terminated.

You're forgetting that not everyone chooses to become pregnant.

No I'm not. I never once said anything about accidental pregnancy (that shouldn't happen in many circumstances unless you're an idiot). I think it's fairly obvious in the context of my reply that I'm talking about people who get pregnant in order to have a child and then get rid of it because it wasn't exactly what they wanted.
