Cancer

OK I have a question about cancer...it's something I've never actually understood...maybe a med student or someone can help me out?

How does cancer actually kill someone?I mean,I understand how lung cancer or throat cancer would kill someone but what about breast cancer or skin cancer?

Is it when it spreads to other parts that it kills or can breast/skin cancer kill on its own?And how does it...I don't see how a lump in someone's breast can kill them*confused*

Ususally cancer cells take over tissues and organs that you need to live, in effect, the cancer cells 'kill off' normal cells (by out competing them), and without the function of the normal cells you can't live...

The problem is usually when cancer spreads (metastasises), although sometimes if the organ of cancer origin is essential (i.e. the brain, lungs, etc) then spread isn't needed to be fatal...

Aye, that's basically it. A carcinoma in your breast can't kill you but a secondary tumour can.

Some cancers also secrete hormones [paraneoplastic], which can bugger things up, especially the hormone and other chemical balances in the body.

Oh yes, I remember some types of lung cancer produce ADH, which could make a bit of a mess of your kidney functions.
