Something a bit different at Durham?

Hello all!

I've applied to read Anthropology at Durham having loved the course, and the lecturers and the collegiate system. However, I've grown up in a bit of an alternate environment and having frequently visited friends at Goldsmiths in London and just chilling out to a bit of jazz or going to a funk bar (was a bit lol-worthy but so worth it!) Is there much of this...different kind of culture than typical clubbing etc in Durham?

I'm all up for clubbing etc but would prefer pubbing it then finding somewhere a bit different to spend my night and dance. Will I fit in/find likeminded people?

So, tell me all your hidden gems of Durham!

There's the angel pub, which is 'alternative' kind of music, and Fishtank.. idk. I've never been particularly into that kind of thing but they do have Jazz nights at the DSU I think. I always enjoyed going to the gala theatre to see comedians and performances there, and there's the student theatre, obviously loads of different music societies, bars and loads of quirky little pubs. If all else fails you always can go to Newcastle! I'm sure you'll find something that interests you
May not be exactly what you're looking for but the Dun Cow was my favourite pub, it's reaaally old, small and they sometimes have people just casually playing instruments in there. Bit folksy!

I went to school in Durham. There's **** all to do. It's nice to visit but actually living there will drive you slowly insane.
Newcastle is awesome though.

You'll always be able to find likeminded people, if you just look hard enough. It's not uncommon for people to go to some kind of evening thing like movie/music/something completely different, go to a pub after, then whoever doesn't have lectures the next morning heading to a club afterwards.

Some people say that Durham's dull and there's nothing to do, but that's definitely not true of the University - there are constantly a huge number of things you've never done before going on, which is why I always encourage people to get involved with societies there.

My sisters at Durham at the mo so I suppose I've only really experienced drinks at the bar and then the ever lovely Klute/Loveshack/Studio etc.

Not expecting London vibe in Durham obviously (!) and some of the things you guys have suggested seem to be worth a look out. I'm pretty confident that if I end up going there, there will be likeminded people - just having a bit of a crisis after having so much fun at other unis.

Thanks for all the responses!

There's plenty to do at Durham! Not only am I going there next year (working on a gap year at the moment), but I've lived here practically my whole life. There's a lot of pubs that are really good, like The Angel as someone previously mentioned. You have a lot of bars and clubs, such as your Klute, some of your more typical ones like Lloyds, there's even a Loveshack near the Gala and Nando's.
