Eating when not hungry

Heya,
I have a problem - I keep eating even when I'm not hungry. The thing is, I'm rarely hungry (like practically never) so I just eat anyway, cos otherwise I'd never eat. The thing is, I don't know when to stop eating, cos no matter how much I eat I never feel particularly full, and even if I do I just eat anyway, because I'm never hungry I don't know when to stop, or when I've had enough.
This sounds really pathetic, but it's getting ridiculous, and I'm eating way to much a day, even though I'm not hungry! I know I'm eating to much, but I don't seem to be able to stop, because I worry that if I do stop eating because I'm eating too much, I just won't start again.
So I guess I just need ideas what to do  And please don't just say ''get more self control'', because that's not very helpful and not really relevant - I just need ideas about how to tell if I'm full and where to draw the line with eating/not eating, seeing as I seem to have really messed up hunger signals. Thanks.

i do this exact same thing at times of stress and exams! try to work out why you keep eating. are you bored/lonely/stressed?

There are a few simple things you can do to make yourself feel full up. Firstly always have a drink with a meal and if you hungry, before you eat have a drink of water as people are often dehydrated and what feels like hunger is your body asking for water.

Secondly try and eat your food slowly so that you enjoy it and your stomach 'realises' it has food and so can tell when your full quicker.

Not sure if this made sense but hopes it helps.

When I'm bored I eat. You should try keeping yourself busy. If not then buy loads of fruit and when you feel like eating get an apple, grapes, pears, or bananas! They'll still fill you up and its healthy
I eat loads of fruit, it keeps your energy levels up

i sympathise with u as i have the same problem lol i eat wen i get bored or i have nothing else to do, just because the stuff is there! and i guess once u get used to it its hard to stop. especially after the easter hols with lots of free time and lots of choc around! not much i can suggest apart from gradually cut down each day, replace food with healthy snacks and also just have 3 big meals a day from brek lunch and dinner with minimal snacking.

Thanks for the replies everyone
Yes, I suppose a large part of the problem is boredom. With it being the last few weeks up to exams now, there seems very little else that's nice in the day other than food, having spent all day revising, so food is all there is to look forward to. I've written myself a 'contract' saying that I will only eat what food my mum gives me (i.e. breakfast and dinner) for the next week, and see how that goes. I read somewhere that writing yourself a contract works, so I figured it's worth a try.
Will definitely try drinking more before meals and eating more slowly too.

drink a glass of water before eating. i you feel like eating...drink water . it would make you feel full...

or try to see a doctor. i have a friend who's depressed and resolved into eating a LOT..maybe you're just bored..or depressed

I am the same, it took so much will power tonight to stop me from cooking burgers. The only problem is I ate an easter egg instead without realising

I really know how that feels! I find it especially difficult to not eat crap because I love food, my willpower is rubbish and my dad buys so much junk food it's unbelievable. He also likes cooking loads of red meat and fried food which is also bad because I feel obliged to eat it.

I also understand what you mean about food being something to look forward to. At the moment we have "Fabulous Bakin' Boys" chocolate cupcakes in the house so I look forward to having one of them as soon as I get home from college...lol god I'm pathetic. Christmas and Easter are waaay too close together, it's a difficult time for us junk food junkies! Somehow I'm not obese which is quite remarkable.

Yeah... about that... in one of my chemistry textbooks it says that approx 16% of calories consumed in britain are consumed through alcoholic beverages, booze is bursting with them. If you wanna fill yourself up (which anon claims isn't happening anyway) then water is much more sensible.

Really all you can do is watch what your eating carefully, make sure you don't overeat. I know that sounds like "self-control" but what I really mean is to know how much you're gonna have before you eat it and stop there.
