Dandruff

What actually is it? I know its to do with the flaking of the skin on the scalp. Apparently, it is more commone to have dandruff then not, over 50% of Americans have it anyway according to some website I was looking at...

Is there anything I can use to get rid of it. I think I read somewhere vinegar is good, but I don't like the idea of putting vinegar in my hair... lol. Or tea tree oil, which I wouldn't mind quite so much... I'm just wondering if theres any 'tried and tested' remedies out there... I only have it very slightly, and I have blonde hair so its not visable, its just annoying as I know its there... Any ideas?

Three words.....

HEAD AND SHOULDERS!!

Seriously, it's good stuff, even if you don't have dandruff it makes your hair nice and shiny and stops you from getting it.

EDIT: sorry! I put pantene and I meant head and shoulders haha. Oops.

head and shoulders, sounds cheesy but it works.
Lol... you guys reckon head and shoulders really works? I've not really noticed it to be all that fantastic. Like I said before, I do only have mild dandruff, I was just wondering if there were any remedies out there other than shampoos and the like... I've never really noticed that much difference using different shampoos...

Head and Shoulders might be alright for people that have mild dandruff but I went through a stage of having it quite badly and only one thing worked in dealing with it effectively: Nizoral.

If you want to try it out I don't think it's available in most supermarkets, but you can pick it up in a pharmacy and there's no need for a prescription or anything.

If you've got really bad dandruff you, you can get Netrogena T/Gel shampoo. Specially designed to get rid of dandruff, expensive though, £7 per bottle. And a small bottle at that.
Its not too bad.. its just annoying... lol.

Was looking for remedies along the lines of the vinegar and tea tree oil suggestions I've read rather than shampoos, if anyones got any...

While we're on the subject of things like vinegar and tea tree oil, anything like that that can help make blonde hair look blonder...? My hair goes really blonde in the summer when the sun comes out, but dulls down in the winter... I know summer is coming up, just thought I'd ask anyway..

Yeah, my brother bought that & he said it was the only anti-dandruff shampoo that actually works.

Here's a anti-dandruff massage you can try:

~Massage your scalp with warm coconut or castor oil twice a week.
~Massage with the tips of your fingers in a circular movement for at least half an hour.
~Leave it on overnight and shampoo the following morning.
~This prevents the hair from becoming dry and moreover prevents dandruff and falling hair by improving the circulation and strengthening the hair roots.

I've read that you should be shampooing daily with a very mild shampoo.
If you have hot showers-stop! Hot water stips your scalp of it's natural oils and dries it out.
Instead, try lukewarm showers and rinse with some cool water.

Thats probably my trouble... I do have hot showers... I should probs start going for the lukewarm temperature... :p:
Head and shoulders is pretty good, but doesn't work for everyone. TGel never helped me at all. Nizoral on the other hand, worked absolute wonders. If you're looking for non shampoo remedies, then tea tree is supposed to be quite good, but wash it out thoroughly or you'll get oily hair.

I used head and shoulders when I didnt have dandruff, and it gave me flakey nasty dandruff for weeks. Selsun Blue is quite good, it got rid of the anti dandruff shampoo INDUCED dandruff.
Head and Shoulders all the way. However, if you have a lot of dandruff, head and shoulders may not be enough, in that case use, Selson Blue, it's really expensive but it's i guess "medicated" so it's stronger.
