Histrionic Personality Disorder

HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER

A pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

* is uncomfortable in situations in which she is not the center of attention (longs to be centre of attention)

* interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior (i.e. extremely flirtatious)

* displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions

* consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self

* has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail (i.e. expresses strong opinions in a dramatic way but without any supporting reasons, facts, specifics etc.)

* shows self-dramatization, theatricality, and exaggerated expression of emotion (i.e. overly dramatic behaviour)

* is suggestible, i.e., easily influenced by others or circumstances (e.g. often says things to please others, flattery)

* considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually are (often refers to casual acquiantances as 'friends' or overstates the level of intimacy in relationships).

Thanks for that.

Is there a reason for this thread?

That describes most teenage girls...most girls for that matter

I'm very sceptical of all these new 'disorders' that keep emerging. I'm sure that once upon a time people just used to have different personalities. But oh no, you have to have a label affixed to your personality as if to justify your every move.
Weird.

That's a good point actually, many badly behaved kids are labeled as having ADHD to explain the problem, but I'm sure only a certain proportion suffer from the true disorder.

Personally what makes it lose its touch for me is the way it uses the pronoun "she". I know histrionic personality disorders are established mental problems, but somehow by writing "she" it just makes it seem like it's written by a male who had a bad experience with women.
