Pretty urgent- rash which doesn't go away when you press it

Right, well I got out of the shower and as I was applying some of that Johnson's moisturiser, I noticed a rash on my lower leg- right at the bottom of the shin. It's only very small, but it's quite purple, and feels a bit like a bruise when you press it.

I pressed it with my fingers first, and it didn't fade at all, so I used a clear glass and it didn't go away either. I'm trying to stay calm, but I've had a headache/migraine for seven days now, and been feeling sick for the first few of those days. My parents are out at a comedy night at the local theatre, and I don't want to call them away for a false alarm.

My sister drew around it with a highlighter, and said that if it expanded, then we should really call someone, but until then there isn't much we can do, as nothing is changing. The good news is that it's very small- only about the diameter of a 50 pence piece at the widest point, and I have no rashes elsewhere.

I just want to know whether it's possible it's just from the moisturiser and shaving, or whether the fact it feels like a bruise is cause for concern and I need to go to the hospital just to rule out Meningitis or anything else. Thanks for any help!

*Edit* [29/04 09:25] It's the next morning, so it's been almost 12 hours since I found it and there still aren't any more rashes and the one I do have seems to have become slightly paler.

if your really concerned, ring up the nhs help line, not 999, but the other 1, the number should be on the web site, they should be able to tell you if they think its serious.

Yeah- I'm just trying to dig the number out at the moment. I used the self help guide on their website, but as soon as you say "Yes" to a red or purple rash which doesn't disappear, that most friendly: "RING 999" animation comes up.

Apparently if you can touch your chest with your chin, then meningitis is unlikely because it affect the spinal cord. And the only problem I have with touching my chest is it makes me feel a bit dizzy, but that's just the headache.

sounds quite serious, dont panick though, were you shaving? coulda peeled a layer of skin off
roll a glass against the purple bit if it doesnt fade then it might be meningitis and you need to dial 999 but only if coupled with any of the following symptoms:
High temperature, fever, possibly with cold hands and feet
Vomiting, sometimes diarrhoea
Severe headache
Neck stiffness (unable to touch the chin to the chest)
Joint or muscle pains, sometimes stomach cramps with septicaemia
Dislike of bright lights
Drowsiness
Fits
The person may be confused or disoriented.

This rash is caused by blood leaking into the tissues under the skin. It starts as tiny pinpricks anywhere on the body. It can spread quickly to look like fresh bruises.

I've got the headache, the dislike of bright lights, cold hands and the purple rash which doesn't go away when you roll a tumbler over it, but I don't have the neck ache, which is supposed to be quite and important symptom. Plus headaches and disliking of bright lights tend to go hand in hand anyway.

better to be safe than sorry i say. especially something like meningitis, successful outcomes of which are more likely to happen if its caught early...

I think that's excessive. I have no medical expertise at all, so take this with a pinch of salt, but doesn't meningitis have a pretty quick onset, and thus symptoms which have been about for a few days are probably not meningitis-related. Ring NHS Direct on 0845 4647 and they should be able to help.
but if youve got most of them i think you need to ring 999 now! my mums a nurse (matron at a hospital) and she says ring 999 now!

Yeah- I agree. Luckily it hasn't got any bigger yet, but I'm still monitoring it.

But isn't the neck pain supposed to be quite a major symptom?

to be honest though, surely if you had meningitis you would be feeling a lot worse and not be able to post coherently on the internet about it?

It says here that the symptoms appear over a maximum of 1-2 days, so according to that the headache/sickness you have been feeling for a week can't be meningitis. With a rash being the only symptom, I'd have thought it'd be unlikely to be meningitis, but phone NHS direct as they actually have proper medical knowledge unlike most of us....
it is but its not the be all and end all of it its possible to have meningitis without the neck pain, especially if you have a headache it might be that youve caught it early on in its progression

yip, sgotta be nhs direct
If you can kiss your knee then you don't have the "neck thing" at least.

I'm slightly hesitant though, because just in case it's a false alarm and I have to get an ambulance to the hospital for nothing. Plus my parents' reaction when they got home would be something.. Especially if I can't get through to them. I can definitely see what you're saying, but I'm holding out until a bit after 12, when they should be home.
