Maximum Car Mileage

Hey. I'm looking to buy a VW Golf 1.6 SE. It comes with loads of extras like multi stack CD player, climate control and heated seats. Its only four years old but its done 92000 miles. The previous owner was IBM. The dealer selling it's asking for £4999. Do you think its a good deal? And what on average is the maximum mileage a car would do before its completely done for?

Thanks

As long as it's been fully serviced and looked after it should be fine.

Mileage isn't much of a problem anymore (within reason)
4 years old, it states as such in the original post...

That's 23k a year, double the "norm".

It's a VW so 92k isn't much of a problem, I am pretty sure that although the 1.6 is underpowered it is quite reliable. Modern engines don't have too much of a problem with mileage, even petrols, however, of course the rest of the car does. (everything from clutch to bearings to gearbox).

You have to think of resale which is a major problem, depending on your mileage, you will hit 100k pretty soon which is a big no no for a lot of buyers, especially with a mediocre car (some people don't mind driving a 100k + BMW 5 series because a) they do that mileage easily and b) only the driver and the mechanic know the mileage if you get what I mean). Having been owned by IBM it will have probably be driven up and down the motorway all day and been looked after, which is good, but it does mean things like the clutch are unlikely to have been replaced.

In comparison, if you look on AT you see (within my home area of nottm):

My verdict, overpriced but not massively.
Personally if you don't know much about cars and their maintenance and you don't intend to keep the car too long, avoid, keep it for a year, add 8k on and you could see it being worth 3k in one year, 2k is a hell of a lot of loss in one year...I put up an SDI in their as SDIs although slow will keep their value better with mileage.

meh!! I think it is a bit overpriced.. just as the above poster said, different internal parts of the engine like the clutch and gearbox and maybe even crankshaft bearings (doubtedly though) would be worn!!!!

Check how many times they have changed the timing belt!

The milleage isn't an issue but for £5000 I would be a little concerned especialy if its city milleage. The other issue is it would be harder to sell on.

My dads car has done 92,000 miles as well, but its 11 years old, the engine still runs like new but you can tell its no longer a new car when you hear it.

My old car (a Corsa) was about 72000 miles when I traded it in, I know it's not that much of a comparism but EVERYTHING was wrong with the car!!!! and the engine sounded soooo agonised :frown:... I don't miss it one bit though!!!! it caused me too many problems

You can get brand new cars for £5000...

Ford Fiesta/Ka for example. Not as high specced as that one, but with a new car you can't go wrong! Plus you get that new car smell...

Graham
Maybe some would be happy with a Ka, but not everybody. Watch for rust within the first 12 months on the sills on those

It was just an example...there are many cars on the market for £5000, just seems a bit odd to me to spend that money on a car that has done 100k miles...

Besides if the new Ka did rust, it would be covered by manufactures warrenty which lasts usually for 3 years. Something that many used cars, the one that he was thinking of buying, don't have.

Graham
The Kas do rust, new or old models, they're famous for it, it is covered under warranty. I have extensive experience with rust, both in terms of my experience with cars, metals and also my degree. I would rather avoid a car that rusts from the moment it was built. Once rust starts, especially in areas on show, it's near impossible to repair, invisibly or otherwise.

If you don't believe me, type "Ka rust" in yahoo. How Ford managed to keep selling them is beyond belief, even at Autobytel et al selling for 5k which they have been doing recently.

I too would rather have a lower mileage car but with 5k i certainly wouldn't buy new, the choice is too limited to a few Korean quality brands and similar rubbish.

Ok maybe not a brand new car, but when i was searching for cars i found Seat Ibiza 1.4 Sports 05 reg, 20k miles on the clock (which is high) for £5k. It still has over 4 yrs of warrenty left (Seat do 5yr warrenty) and is basically a VW Polo in disguise!

My point is if you hunt around you can get decent cars for £5k with high mileage on them for their age, but only 1 year old! If you are a young driver, you are not going to do high mileage and if you keep it for 3 years it will go back down to normal and you won't lose an excessive amount of money on it.

Check out www.drivethedeal.co.uk I used these guys to get my new car, got the price down from £8.5K OTR at a dealer, to £8k with some extras! They do used cars as well so they are worth having a look at.

Graham
I don't mean to disagree with you on everything but Seat as far as I know don't do a 5 year warranty....

My friend has just bought and is awaiting delivery for a new shape Ibiza (1.9 Tdi; 100) and he tells me it's 3 years, the Seat website tells me it's 3 years. AFAIK, the only manufacturer to offer 5 year warranty is Hyundi.

Ummm...

Well i just bought one last week (The new shape Ibiza 1.4 Sport) and it was 5yr warrenty i'm sure. Maybe that was dealer warrenty as well on top tho. I just know that my car is under warrenty for 3Yrs for parts and labour and 2 yrs parts (maybe this is the dealer warrenty) and the paintwork for 12years.

I can't remember tbh, i was too excited getting my new car lol! The point still stands tho, even if it is not 5yr warrenty, the used Seat will still have 2 yrs on the manufacturers and i am sure if it is approved used it has 2 yrs on top of that dealer warrenty, so it adds up to 5yrs. Except the final 2yrs are just parts.

Waaaaay too confusing and i can't be assed to walk outside and get the handbook thingy now!

Apparantly the worst built vehicles VAG produce is often Volks Wagon, Skoda and Audi have the best and Seat is just a tad below Skoda in terms of build.

I would rather have a Seat than a VW though, its just the inverted snob in me.

Although I would not want a Hyundai (for poltical reasons as much as anything) badges don't bother me.

PS I never knew the KA was a rust bucket, I know the Fiesta MK3 was which the car is based on but as longs as you washed them and made sure the paint was in good condition it wasn't a problem, you still see lots of 1989 MK3s on the road.
Sister just got my nan's N-reg classis which has infinitely more rust that my M-reg Uno I used to have - infinitely as the uno didn't really have any. Rust on sills, body work and front and rear under bumper parts, valances sometimes they're called.

But yeah, the Ka is infamous for it, as I say, do a search for it or even just look on wikipedia for a nice uninformed biased and usually wrong view

My dads Escort has a bit of rust on one of the sills but I am keeping on top of it so its not spreading, its only service rust.

I just scrape it off every year and paint hammerite(sp) on it (its the same colour as the car ).
