you're right, shaving upwards gives more of a closer shave than downwards, i still dont know why against the grain is bad, will come back to see some answers.
I always shave against it

shaving against it causes you to take off more skin so your more likely to cut yourself and get a rash etc. but its better to do wen u need a closer shave

According to this website:
Always shave in the direction of the hair growth as shaving against the grain can cause razor burns and in-growing hairs.
I read somewhere that shaving against it make the hair grow back thicker.

but against the grain, gives a better effect, be gentle when you shave and there wont be any rash, or razor burn.

is it true about getting more ingrowing hairs when shaving against the grain

depends where you're shaving I suppose..

the thickness of teh hair won't change, what will change is the fact it has a flat rather than tapered head, so while its stubbly length it appears to be thicker

I find that I have to shave against the grain to look like I've made half an effort. Gotta be careful about cutting yourself though, that can go badly wrong if you're not careful (heard a story from a friend about getting his razor blade stuck in his cheek- not nice!)

cheek? there's worse places to get the blade stuck when shaving., try sack.
What does an ingrowing hair actually FEEL like? I'm pretty sure it (shaving upwards) is worth the risk because half the time my mum thinks I haven't shaved when I come down for breakfast...
ingrowing hair is just like when the hair grows into the skin isnt it? i get this randomly sometimes on my legs for some reason (i dont shave em) but ive never had one on the face and have been finishing my daily shave against the grain for years.
Yes I know what it is, but is it as OMFGZZZ~!!!1 painful as all the "Shaving Tips!" leaflets always make out?
I shave agaisnt the grain on my leg but towards everywhere else cos i;ve found in 'certain places' shaving against the grain can actually be a little painful.
I always shave against, otherwise it does look like I haven't bothered. I'm very tempted to try some sort of hair-regrowth-inhibiting lotion that I saw on the net, because I have this rather aggravating problem where I tend to end up with a 9am shadow.

I allways shave against too. Clearner shave indeed. The assosciated problems are pain, more likely to cut yerself, and also, if you shave too close then the hairs may grow inwards. Which can be very painful and very dangerous.

basically everyone i talk to says shaving upwards against the grain is "bad" but i dont really understand why and whats better about shaving downwards as it doesnt seem to get as close???

I shave against and wet. Magazines all say that it's good if you want a closer shave. What's the prob? lol

Shaving with would do absolutely nothing for me.

And no, I've never had an ingrowing hair or anything as a result of going against.
