Hi, so I've just started AS and our school wants us to a mini project in preparation for when we are made to write our "real" EPQ. The mini project has to be 1000 words.

Problem is i haven't even decided on a topic/ hypothesis yet

I'd like to discuss a literary theory (or a series of literary theories) and base it around this quote from Sethra Lavode by Steven Brust (although being as stupid as i am i haven't read it, I'd just like to base my work around a quote):

"In my opinion, the proper way to judge a novel is this: Does it give one an accurate reflection of the moods and characteristics of a particular group of people in a particular place at a particular time? If so, it has value. Otherwise, it has none"
    Steven Brust, Sethra Lavode

So I guess it'd basically be arguing against the idea of basing a literary piece solely on it's literary merits. Unless I've completely misinterpreted it?

Could anyone help me with a hypothesis or recommend books that would help me with this?!

    Thanks in advance

I think you should definitely research the western canon, and if you study AQA b ask your teacher for the A2 critical anthology as it would be particularly helpful. You should definitely read up on Harold Bloom. But also try learning about what other factors people consider make good literature. Aesthetic unity, subject matter, intrinsic patterns etc.

I've been looking into Bennett& Royal for my referencing, i'm not sure but i think i'm going to ask my teacher when i get back to school :/
Or I might just find single quotes to embed in my essay then do proper in depth research when it comes to the full EPQ
