My sister's boyfriend has just finished training, so i know a bit about the process of becoming one, not sure about pay tho sorry....

The process is pretty gruelling, you have interviews and some tough physical tests that spread over quite a few weeks. If you pass all the interviews/tests then you're put on a sort of list of potential firefighters, then if a vacancy comes up in your area you're told and can apply (but there's no guarantee you get a post!). If about a year or so passes since you completed the tests & you still haven't got a post, then you have to redo all the tests to check you're still fit enough...

Hope that helps a bit, sorry i don't really know all the details, but if you're not put off by that i'm sure you can look into it a bit more!

Dr_Evil_666
how much does an average firefighter earn per year and how do you become one?

is it a good job..?

I'm applying to Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service and also to Greater Manchester FRS.

http://www.fireservice.co.uk/information/payscales.php

All of the information you could ever want can be found on that website. Is it a good job? From what i have seen, i would say yes! However it is a very popular career choice and you will find lots of people battling for each recruit position. For example with Greater Manchester, the letter i received with my application pack stated that 9000 people expressed interest and that they sent out 3000 application packs to randomly selected people from that 9000. They are looking for 120 new recruits.

In response to your query as to whether it's a good job, I would have to say yes, without a doubt.

My Dad was a firefighter for over 25 years before he retired earlier this year (compulsory at 50) and I can say that I'm really proud of what he did for a living. There is a real sense of camararderie both within watches and stations and geniune job satisfaction and respect from the general public.

It's not a graduate job, so there is that side of the equation to look at though.

If it's something you want to do then go for it, it's not easy to get in mind you, it's tremendously popular.

Hey, topcat, my dad works for the fire brigade as well, hes got about 1.5 years left, then he will have done 30 years, and will be 50 - so he's finishing!

@ Dr Evil, it is a good job, from the perspective I have seen, it can be very hard work, esp when you work your way up and get promoted etc. My dad currently works a 78 hour week, which isnt easy. Having said that, I would echo top cat in saying that it is a good job and I think there is alot of job satisfaction to be got from it.

If you're interested in working for the London Fire Brigade, their website is:

 Lots of information on there, though apparently they're not currently recruiting.

I've found the best thing to do is to keep on checking the various brigade websites for information about recruitment. Recruitment often is only open for a short period of time.
