A homologous pair is a pair of chromosomes containing a maternal and paternal chromatid joined to together at the centromere. The have the exact same gene - although may have different alleles of these genes, Position (loci) and size. Members of a homologous pair pair up during meiosis.

Mark scheme for what a homologous pair of chromosomes are:
1 one maternal and one paternal / AW ;
2 carry same genes ;
3 carry, same / different, alleles ;
4 (usually) same / similar, length ;
5 centromere in same position ;
6 same banding pattern ;
7 pair up in meiosis / form bivalent ;

Any 3 for 3 marks
