I take offence when people say this to me - I mean, it's never a compliment really is it?

Why do people say this? Is it because they are threatened by your intelligence?

How do you personally respond to such a comment? What's a good comeback to it?

I don't know how I would reply to that.. . probably something like "oh is it too much for you to comprehend?" Personally I wouldn't take offense because such a small matter wouldn't bother me too much.

No offense but it's probably the way you present yourself

On this occasion it came from someone who knows I have a degree - I work hard to educate myself and have to grapple with self-doubt to stay motivated because nobody around me reads.

This particular person keeps making remarks and honestly they do get to me. Trying to put me down and undermine my intelligence and knowledge I have worked to gain.

I think they are just insecure about their own intelligence, but they should improve themselves rather than drag others down.

    Depends on the context.
Sometimes it's because that word isn't necessary in that situation.
I've had some eejit throw words he clearly got out a thesaurus during a heated argument, as though it made him sound more intelligent.

The residual benefits of perusing this page are monotone increasing and unbounded above, however you should be aware that many persons consider my ability to perceive the obvious a dubious asset.

Yeah I get this all the time :teehee:
