My application goes along the lines of:
Oxford
Durham
Warwick/York
Manchester

I guess when I applied to Law last year and got an offer from Durham but not Warwick I started liking them more, plus it was cool when I went up for the open days. Manch gave an offer too but I didn't much fancy it - though I guess I'll wait to see if there are any offers before deciding where I want to go this time :P

lol..."Hull University" do PPE - whats that...Tier 8 or something?

OH well, I put Durham down instead of York because I wasn't only applying to PPE courses. Didn't realise York was so well regarded.

I got an offer from both Warwick and York after getting rejected at Trinity College, Oxford. but I decided to go to York instead and it is officially known (currently) among the academics and all other universities that York is better than Warwick for PPE. Now I'm in my second year at York and I still believe I have made the right choice of coming here. I have few friends who are at Warwick doing PPE and I can say my course structures and lectures are much more interesting and productive. Plus York has a special School just for PPE students which is unique and no other universities have this, not even Oxford. The collaboration between these three departments are fantastic and even this one Oxford tutor I know told me he wished Oxford would have something like this. Ofcourse it might look better on your CV if you have gone to Warwick but at the end of the day it is where you'll be staying for next three years. When I visited Warwick I wasn't impressed. It's in middle of no where, most people weren't nice (And I thought Oxford was bad) because there are far too much international students who were mostly anti-social and stick to their own little groups. Plus it's really depressing. I'm just sharing my experience with you all that's all as I have spent my summer (two years ago) at Warwick doing summer course.

Hmm, thanks for your first post to help out here! I was begining to think I'd put warwick then durham then york - but now you've thrown me into confusion hmm.. The general concensus from what I've heard on here is that warwick was better but you seem to know what you're talking about hmm.

PPE is one of York's specialities, they've done it for a very long time and have created a course which is unique in many ways and is considered by most as the best PPE course apart from Oxford. Warwick basically bunged together EPAIS with Philosophy to create a makeshift PPE course.

*sighs*

I know this is from almos a year ago, but it needs to be said.

Just because Hull is seen as an unfashionable city, it doesn't make the uni rubbish. It's actually a fairly good uni (in quite a pleasent semi-rural area) and are quite strong in philosopy and fairly strong in politics.

Rant over.

Ranking universities is always going to be a fairly controversial thing, and not always accurate. What are you looking for in your final choice. Your choices so far are small city unis (Oxford, Durham) or campus based universities in/near small cities. So do you want your fifth choice to be in a similar environment, or would you consider a larger city. If you want to go for another campus uni, would you consider Warwick (and this brings me on the next question).

Those are all excellent and oversubscribed universities, are you looking for another AAA-AAB? I'd advise a slightly less competitive one/an ABB. However, if you are predicted AAA (or even AAAA) and don't stuff up your PS I can't see the harm in having a high fifth choice.

I didn't come across this thread until just now. I'm suprised by the couple of people who place Manchester above (or at the same level) as Durham/York. They are both, in my opinion, at Warwick's level. They may not be quite as strong in economics, but I believe both (certainly Durham) are stronger in philosophy.

I would certainly disagree over that. Durham/York's Eco >>>>>> Manchester.

Disagree Manchester being superior in PPE? I don't know where those couple of members got that from. It's not as strong as either Durham or York in philosophy or economics (arguably quite a gap). There's no great difference in politics.

It seemed most were putting it on that level as it's still considered a very good university rather than considering the strength of all three departments.

woops - misread :P

There is definitely a big gap between the university in terms of Eco.

Manchester is very, very highly rated on TSR (I have to chuckle when I see it regularly mentioned in that "underrated universities" thread in General University Discussion).

In 2004, when UMIST and Victoria Uni of Manchester joined together, to create the University of Manchester, it has created this massive research institution (largest outside Oxford and Cambridge, I think). Because of this it's very highly rated by many on TSR. Go back a couple of years and on some league table threads you'll find comments like "Durham above Manchester, that's a joke". Quite funny really. It's a fantastic research uni and, in my opinion, has made a leap from being the dependable redbrick (that places like Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield etc are. Still, I don't think it's quite at the level of Durham/Warwick/UCL/Bristol/York in terms of undergraduate quality. Not in the range of departments, particularly not in PPE.

So this is why I think Manchester was being rated so highly, rather than its strengths in philosophy, politics and economics at an undergrad level. As has been mentioned, it's nothing special in any of the three disciplines. Politics may be its strongest department of the three.

Anyway, I can only really think of Lancaster off the top of my head. A good uni, campus based with Lancaster itself being a small city. It's not as strong as Durham, York (and Oxford, obviously) in PPE. But you won't find any universities stronger at PPE than the ones you've picked so far and it's but still very good.

To go back to my other post, there is Hull. Don't be too put off by the city's image. It's a fairly good uni (with good philosophy department in particular). Although Hull isn't a small city, the uni is campus based). I called it semi-rural before, that's perhaps pushing it (it's distinctly urban). However, it's not in Hull itself, it's inbetween Hull and a (very) large village called Cottingham.

Still, Hull's still a decent-size city so probably not what you're looking for.
